T his com for winning the race was 33k before tax and other expenses (flight tickets etc) and if taking an average of what his earnings have been thus far this season the 10 days off will cost him in the region of 22k in earnings, also dont loose sight that of the fact that the jocks are mates outside of racing and Bernard would never risk injury to his fellow jocks not to mention himself and any horse in the race by deliberately riding dangerously...also it must be remembered that he has ridden in 330+ races locally as well as a good few abroad this season and this is his first transgression, the truth of the matter is although winning races is what he is paid to do it is not "all about the money" safe riding is of paramount importance to all jockeys but sometimes when split second decisions have to be made mistakes will happen, its the weakness of being human
