What a shame!!
I empathise for all those owners of horses that do not win due to the prejudice/bias views of the panel.....imagine my horse was nominated for best horse in the 2 year category and my friend was on the panel of judges.....without a doubt my friend will vote for my horse.....the current process is absurd.... contrary to all reason or common sense.

I'm with Jack Dash here. The system works fine. Jockeys, unlike trainers, breeders, owners or sires, are the only ones who cannot be represented by more than one runner in a race and cannot compete at more than one meeting simultaneously. It makes sense, then, to judge their championship by how many races they win.
As for the awards, I have been part of the panel many times (though not this year, or last) and the system works pretty well as long as there is a) a sufficient number of panelists (which there is) and b) the the panel members are sufficiently intelligent not to focus too exclusively on events in their home province and can remember performances from more than three months ago. By and large, over the years that I was part of the awards process there was never a real problem on this score. As for the "buddy" thing, I remember one panelist excluding himself from a category where one of the nominees was a horse that he was in part responsible for buying. Thus he voluntarily declined to cast what could easily have been a "biased" vote, and everyone else respected him for it.

I complety agree with Stakes for Trainers and most wins for Jockeys. We are looking for the "Champion" trainer (getting back to that word again), if the trainer who has the most Stakes only has 50 wins for the year but wins the Met, July, Summer Cup and Gold Cup surely he should be Champion Trainer over a trainer from a smaller venue who has 250 horses in his yard and has 3 plus horses in each race and by pure weight of runners has more wins. This system also gives a chance to smaller stables who has 2 or 3 top horses could challenge for big cheques over a the various age groups and distances.
Whereas for jockeys they can obviously only take 1 ride per race and generally one meeting per day bar the odd day JHB night KZN meeting. So for them they have to produce winners day in and day out to compete for the title.

I'm sure some of these panelist can't remember what they ate for supper last night.....what's the chance of them remembering the performance from more than 3 months ago.....generally people are bias.....I still maintain a point system will be better & transparent
What criteria do they use to select the panel?
Is there any special qualification do you require to be part of this panel?
Does the panel consist of an equal number of representatives from each province?
Where there any objections by loosing owners w.r.t. this process of selecting the winners in the horse categories?

Although I am loathed to say it for obvious reasons Muzi @ 11/2 to win the title is way too short with the likes of Coetzee, Marwing, Strydom to contend with all at 20/1 not to mention Fourie Lerena et el...please God Im wrong but as biased as I am I could never take 11/2
