Ireland grab Shergar Cup

IRELAND were again celebrating Shergar Cup victory on Saturday after a first, second and fifth in the final leg of the challenge saw the team claim a third successive win in the Ascot-based competition.

Captain Paul Hanagan led his Great Britain side from the front to take the Silver Saddle award for leading points scorer at the meeting, but the champion jockey admitted it was a bittersweet success.

"I'm a bit gutted we didn't do it as a team but I'm chuffed to bits to win the Silver Saddle - it's great," Hanagan said after winning the award on his first appearance at the Shergar Cup.

Richard Hughes, captain of the Ireland team, said: "It's a great pity I didn't ride a winner but I've never ridden to the line as much in my life!

"Between us we had a bit of a joke at the start [before the last] saying if we saw anyone in red we should knock them over!"
