Hanagan favourite to
land top jockey award
CHAMPION jockey Paul Hanagan expected to lead his side from the front at the Shergar Cup on Saturday with the Great Britain captain favourite to land the Silver Saddle title for the jockey accumulating the most points at the meeting.
Furthermore, Hanagan and his Great Britain teammates Hayley Turner and Jim Crowley are the short-priced favourites to land the overall competition in front of a bumper Ascot crowd.
Great Britain are the 6-4 favourites with Ladbrokes and William Hill to beat off last year's winners Ireland and teams from Europe and the Rest Of The World in the annual jockeys' challenge.
Some of the top riders from across the globe are competing in the competition, but they are all predicted to struggle behind Hanagan who is 3-1 favourite to land the individual prize with Victor Chandler.
The jockey, who is odds-on favourite to become champion jockey again, is looking forward to competing in his first Shergar Cup and feels it is "interesting" that he is favourite to win the Silver Saddle.
"I'm really looking forward to the Shergar Cup at Ascot and I'm getting a massive kick out of representing my country and being captain of the Great Britain side," Hanagan wrote on his lovetheraces.com blog.
"If I can't win then I'll be rooting for my team mates Hayley Turner and Jim Crowley but there will be good banter between the other teams in thechanging room which makes it all the more enjoyable."
He continued: "I think the home team have a good book of rides and it's interesting that I've been singled out as favourite to win the Silver Saddle as top rider at the meeting.
"I don't know if that's justified because you can get some funny results in this type of event. Some of the horses just benefit from a change of hands and a completely different style of riding. You only have to go back to past Shergar Cups to see that."
The going at Ascot for the Shergar Cup, which begins early at 12.50pm to allow Channel 4 to cover the meeting for the first time, is good to soft on the straight course and good to soft, soft in places on the round course after 17mm of rain on Thursday.
