Australia - half the population but double the GDP, therefore they have a standard of living 4 times greater than in SA. And they can still sponsor their best race 14 times more than we can do. :(

At the Melbourne Cup, they get more than 100 000 people at the racecourse for the day, its is probably the biggest social event of the year in Melbourne, bigger than the Formula 1 Grand Prix. Not only does the course fill up on that raceday, but also on other racedays that lead up to Cup Day, bear in mind that there are something like 4 race meetings in 7 days around Cup Day.

This is a race that is steeped in history, hence the billing - "The race that stops a nation" I

lived across the street from Mooney Valley Racecourse and watched the Cox Plate from my bedroom window and listened to the commentary from the course with some 60 000 - 80 000 people at the track.

I think the damage to course attenedance, in South Africa, was done in the 70s and 80s when kids were not allowed to racecourse, that was the time when todays generation was growing up and they were deprived of learning to love and watch horseracing.

Americain lands Listed race at Deauville

BY DESMOND STONEHAM 3:03PM 2 AUG 2011

Report: France, Tuesday

Deauville: Prix de Reux (Listed) 1m4½f, 3yo+

AMERICAIN (Alain de Royer-Dupre/Gerald Mosse) made a perfect start to his preparation to bid for back-to-back victories in the Emirates Melbourne Cup by taking this competitive Listed event in style.

Full race result
The six-year-old son of Dynaformer swooped on the long-time leader Diamond Boy inside the final furlong and quickened impressively to winby a length.

Americain was not firing on all six cylinders in the spring but now appears to be at the top of his game after a break of three months.

Diamond Boy just held off Burma Gold for second place and the favourite Ley Hunter ran fourth ahead of last year's Prix du Cadran and Prix Royal-Oak winner, Gentoo. The field of six were covered by just under three lengths at the post.

Alain de Royer-Dupre: "seasonal"

PICTURE: Martin Lynch

Royer-Dupre said in the winner's circle: "He was not happy in the Spring andit takes time to recover after crossing the world.

"Americain is a seasonal horse who comes to his best at this time. The horse is now spot on. Like last year, he will now go and try to win another Prix Kergorlay (August 21) and then go into quarantine. He may not have another race before the Melbourne Cup.

"Gerald (Mosse) gets on very well with the horse who was looking magnificent today and he has never had any problems."

That opinion was mirrored by Mosse. He said: "Americain is one of the best looking horses I have ever sat on and he is coming back to his best. He picked up nicely after a flat spot." Americain has been entered in the Caulfield Cup and the Cox Plate which could become options is Royer-Dupre feels another prep could be beneficial."

Gentoo was running for the first time since running ninth in Tenno Sho (spring) onMay 1 and Alain Lyon was well pleased with his seven-year-old. He said: "He needed this outing and all is well with the horse. In principle, he now head for the Kergorlay and he will tell us if he is ready for the race. Later it will be the Gladiateur, Cadran and Royal-Oak like last year."

The difference between Auz racing and SA racing is the way that racing is marketed...

In Australia like in the UK race course attendance is booming, because the public are there for a great day out.Which imo attracts sponsors.

In SA all the marketing is geared towards punting..

@Hibs:

'In SA all the marketing is geared towards punting..'

More specifically, share-holder profits to the detriment of the entire industry!
