The trimming of the hooves.... ensuring the hooves are balance....detecting any infection in the hooves.... I guess that's what makes a good farrier

It is very important, if u get the job done right, your horses can be a "shoe-in",

The old trainers used to say " No foot no horse" Still holds true today.

Yup-no foot, no horse. And there is no textbook method, as you rarely get a horse with a textbook hoof. They are very unique. We have a horse that cannot be without a shoe, yet has such weak walls, that he is prone to losing his shoes. If he keeps them on, he runs a decent race. Good farriers are hard to find. I put good farriery right up there with importance as nutrition
