Al's got a point ... a Gimmee generation born to another Gimmee generation, and no ethics at all. And no fear of police or courts to keep a short leash on those young dogs that feel society no longer has any right to say how they can use their sharp new teeth. Still imho its been coming for some time. How about this one from William Butler Yeats, written just after WW1 (1919):
Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
Maybe someone can set it to music after the "London's burning, London's burning" experience.

They used the first line, yes, singing (in the 70's sometime?) about the Brixton riots ... but it's originally from a nursery rhyme:
London's burning, London's burning.
Fetch the engines, fetch the engines.
Fire fire, Fire fire!
Pour on water, pour on water.
London's burning, London's burning.
Fetch the engines, fetch the engines.
Fire fire, Fire fire!
Pour on water, pour on water.

Nice one Mav - This was after WW1 and Pink Floyd (The Wall) post WW2 - We have to ask; is the world at war?

Scotia, you something-or-other, you can see my age on Facebook! It's no state secret ... LOL!
Al, I hope not. Or to put it differently, was the world ever not at war? (just by the way, I LOVE Pink Floyd ... do you know their song Shine On You Crazy Diamond? ... imho one of the great songs of the post-Beatles era. OK, OK, it's not horses or racing or sport, Hibs don't look so stern pleeeze!)
Here's a different spin on the identity/background of the rioters ... are we at war? yes? ... no? It's a excerpt from New Scientist ... (and Scotia, if you chirp me about my favourite Saturday morning reading matter I shall say something rude. And then you'll be sorry.)
"A millionaire's daughter, a school teaching assistant and a lifeguard are hardly the sort of people you'd have expected to get caught up in the wave of violent looting that hit the UK earlier this week. So what drives privileged or seemingly virtuous people to do bad things?
As those responsible for the disturbances begin to appear in court, it is becoming clear that the looters were not all out-of-control teenagers with nothing to lose. They came from a variety of backgrounds, and in some cases have expressed horror and regret at what they did."
Interesting ... I wonder what really was in their minds? If anything.

Mav - Back in the 80's and necklacing in particular, a law abiding person could be pulled in by the group psyche and have a common cause in killing a person. In today's day and age we are never alone, we are always a part of the group psyche through social media. In fact I would go one step and say that our physical beings are living vicariously in the social media life. Soon the social media life will be living vicariously through our physical beings.
Social media is shaping our future.
Shine On You Crazy Diamond is a winner. In fact I borrowed some of the lyrics in a post some time back. It was in reference to the ABC site and a birthday or something:
Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
You were caught on the crossfire of childhood and stardom,
blown on the steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter,
come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!
