Top-class gelding Pierre Jourdan, who made a winning start to the season in a 1450m Conditions Plate at Turffontein last Saturday, is among the 49 horses nominated at the first-entry stage for the R2-million Sansui Summer Cup to be run over 2000m at Turffontein on Saturday 26 November.
Pierre Jourdan, winner of two legs of the SA Triple Crown as a three-year-old, came right back to best towards the end of last season and put up a terrific effort when second to subsequent Horse of the Year Igugu in the Vodacom Durban July.
The five-year-old’s connections will be relieved that Igugu’s name was not among the first entries for the Summer Cup declared yesterday. The star four-year-old filly is currently at champion trainer Mike de Kock’s KwaZulu-Natal yard and is likely to campaign at the Cape this summer.
But there are several other high-quality runners among the first entries for the Cup, notably last season’s Equus Champion Three-Year-Old Colt The Apache.
Trainer Gavin van Zyl’s star Mogok colt recorded two Grade 1 wins last season, including the Champions Cup over 1800m at Greyville on the last day of the term. He had earlier finished fourth in the Durban July, just 1.15 lengths behind Pierre Jourdan.
He should have progressed physically from three to four and will be a huge contender if he lines up in the Summer Cup.
Van Zyl has also entered Bulsara, runner-up to The Apache in the Champions Cup, and SA Derby winner Seal.
Owner-trainer St John Gray has nominated his top-class mare Dancewiththedevil. She won three Grade 1 races at 1600m last season, but the 2011 Equus Champion Older Horse still needs to show that she is effective beyond that distance.
Other big-names in the list of first entries include last year’s Summer Cup winner Flirtation, who is one of 20 horses nominated with merit ratings of 100 and above. She is one of more than a dozen entries from the powerful De Kock stable with the others including evergreen Rudra (winner of the 2008 Summer Cup), Captain’s Wild, only narrowly beaten by Happy Landing in the Champions Challenge, Greyville 1900 winner Safwan and Perana, winner of the Grade 2 Victory Moon Stakes last year.
Champions Challenge winner Happy Landing has also been nominated.
