Millard's new Empress Club
13 years 8 months ago
Tony Millard has uncovered a new star in Ambitious Dragon, last season since taking over the training of him Ambitious Dragon won 7 races which is a Hong Kong record and in doing this won the Derby and QE2 !
In his first run back over 1400m and carrying 133Lbs he was just devastating.
Douglas Whyte said the best he has ever ridden, Tony Cruz described it as special, but just about everyone else was left speechless as Horse of the Year Ambitious Dragon roared into the new season with an effortless demolition of the National Day Cup field that left unanswered only the question of how good the five-year-old might be.
Under 133 pounds, Ambitious Dragon coasted towards the tail of the field behind a solid pace, then simply rounded up and hog-tied most of Hong Kong's top grade runners in a matter of strides before Whyte had time to do his hair and pose for the photo at the end of the 1,400m.
The margin of 2-1/2 lengths underplayed the authority of the victory which was reminiscent of the great days of Fairy King Prawn and Electronic Unicorn, and last season's Derby and QE II Cup winner has already thrown down the gauntlet to whatever comes for the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Cup in December.
It was part of a great day for Whyte, who rode four winners, including the two feature successes in the space of half an hour, but had no hesitation in his admiration of Ambitious Dragon.

From South China Morning Post, Sunday 2nd:
"He just picked them up in five strides and I was able to stand up on him at the finish. That was like a barrier trial. He's the best horse I've ever ridden, a champion," said Whyte. "With the big weight and the cracking pace, I was happy to let him have a breather early but you feel him starting to bring himself into it rounding the turn and I actually had to hold him off Sichuan Success' heels to make sure we cornered correctly. He's an amazing horse - the kind of horse you dream of all your life."
"Whyte may retain the ride for now but has a wait now to see if trainer Tony Millard will re-engage French rider Maxime Guyon, who won the Derby on Ambitious Dragon but was replaced by Whyte in the QE II Cup when required in France. Guyon remains in France in the coming weeks, in a pitched battle for the French championship, but there is a possibility he will be here in time for the internationals."

Ambitious Dragon who posted a career best RPR of 125+ in a Group 3 handicap at Sha Tin. He is the leading Hong Konger this year and jockey Douglas Whyte thinks he's the best he's ever ridden.
