One very important factor that a punter must keep in mind is the following:-
A horse does not know it's betting price nor what it costs as a yearling.
Bookies price up and they are right most of the time (based on form etc).
But they have no knowledge as to which horse is working better at home.
We as punters follow the betting and sometimes think that we are "Smith-ed" etc.

With all due respect, how the hell could Lancelin be odds on under that penalty, when he was battling in handicaps off his old mark? And if you think I'm being clever after the event you can check my page in the Winning Form. I tipped him to run 5th. Now I'm not saying that Karl Neisius or anybody else is a saint, but all of us here in the office nearly fell off our chairs when we saw Lancelin had been priced up at 6/10.:
