Snow Fairy to attempt historic Vase-Cup double
BY JON LEES 3:52PM 23 NOV 2011
Hong Kong: Snow Fairy was airborne again on Wednesday en route to Sha Tin, where she will bid to secure a unique double after connections opted to run her in the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Vase rather than in the more prestigious Cup, which she won last year.
The filly left Japan, where she clinched a second successive triumph in the Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup, for a Hong Kong clash with Melbourne Cup first and second Dunaden and Red Cadeaux, her own stablemate, in the 1m4f Group 1 Vase on December 11.
Trainer Ed Dunlop said: "We had nominated for the Cup and the Vase initially but last night I had a long discussion with Mrs Patino [owner] and we have elected to run in the Vase. She's won the Cup and no horse has won the Cup and the Vase. She is flying as we speak from Japan to Hong Kong ."
Ryan Moore will ride Snow Fairy but no jockey is booked for Red Cadeaux, while connections of Dunaden are hoping Craig Williams will be free as Christophe Lemaire, a late replacement for the then banned Williams at Flemington, is likely to be required by the Aga Khan for either Shareta or Vadamar.
