The Higgs bosun for dummies

I need to understand this and share with you in my own words.

What is it? It is a member of sub-atomic particles like protons, electrons, etc. but currently exists only in theory, something like faith I suppose. It is the last missing particle still to be discovered, to complete the theory of the Standard Model – why do particles have mass? It’s the particle that gives other particles mass. Else we would still not know from where particles get their mass.

Who thought of this? - The Higgs bosun was postulated by, amongst others, an Edinburgh based Peter Higgs. Ya see, the Scotch have done it again.

How does it work? (Goes beyond me).

But why is it so important to know this? Mass is the quantity of stuff anything has even the quantity of stuff which Igugu or Frankel have. If Igugu’s particles didn’t have mass all her particles would buzz around at the speed of light and Igugu would be no more.

Has it been found now? No, not yet and it may never, physically, be found. However, with all the current experiments at the CERN collider, current observation may suggest that it may indeed exist. Apparently science requires many experiments to confirm a pattern. They mention that if one flips a coin ten times and if “heads” comes up eight times then one can assume that the coin is loaded (like some clansmen here may do) – this is comparatively at the same stage of the experiment at the collider. They still need to flip the coin a million more times or so to see if the results present the same observations.

And if the Higgs can’t be found? If these studies show that the bosun does not exist then the Standard Model would have to be rewritten and all our current thoughts on the universe would have to be revolutionised. Now, why do Igugu and Ebony Flyer run so fast?

The Higgs bosun is the Triple Crown of physics ... plus the Kentucky Derby and the Arc and the World Cup ... the one who finds it has boasting rights just about forever.

And what about those pestiferous Swiss Neutrinos? Going faster than light ... maybe. Or maybe not. If they do, then they would win any race on the calender before it even started, ha ha! Maybe win two Triple Crowns, this year's and last year's. Now that would be something to boast about ...

I heard on Sky News that Professor Stephen Hawking lost a $100 bet that the Higgs would not be found. (I always knew this thread had some relevance to ABC (:P))

Even scientists like a bet now and then. It adds to the spice of life, hey!

I have to admit that I doubted its existence because as far as I could tell, this guy Higgs was not Jewish. Go figure.Who knew? I guess it is not oompossible that a goy could come up with something this brilliant, but like the bonun, it does stretch the imagination!
