Without being unkind (or burying my head in the sand), I'd say that that would be true about just about any profession / sport / industry the world over. It comes as part of the package. But every day, every single person can and does make a difference by who you vote for with your wallet, who you choose to give your horse to, what you will and won't accept from your trainer / vet / groom / jockey.

Thanks zsuzsuanna But apathy and lack of interest from those in charge show how little people care about the Horse.Obviosly the cheats and vets who supply them wish we would go away.BUT I WILL NOT LEAVE

Nothing about our sport is natural. Horses are confined for most hours of the 24 hour day. Horses are a natural herd animal but we keep them estranged from each other till they forget what they are. We will run a struggling athlete as many time a year, a month, a week, as we want, flogging a dead horse while no one seems to get the message that continual lasts is abuse in public, never mind in the yard.
In the UK there is zero tolerance for steroids. In the US you can run them on steroids. In SA you can train them on steroids.
In fact in the US you find continual cases of any lunatic trying every abusive thing imaginable if it might get the win. There is always someone willing to try something on these animals. In my opinion, the tougher the penalties the more integrity in the system, and some states in the US are applying that idea now as a method to save the sport.
It's probably not the stragglers getting the drugs or advanced medical attention. The multiple positives of the sheiks string abroad must make you wonder whether their yards in Dubai are given the same level of scrutiny at home.

Is that so? I was part of many horses prepared for sales and sometimes we had horses that looked super well on straight commercial feeds. I've had some mares who just always looked like it was middle of summer. The best single effect was when you secured a great load of lucerne...best bang for your buck ever, especially after a period without.
You are being unfair on trainers who do get their horses to look outstanding (Although i will admit I have no clue what one would give a horse that remains undetected by science so maybe you know more?) I have been to the races more than most, and many times your "oilrag shine" method of steroid detection let me down as a punter, or the roids didnt work LOL.

From Horsesciencenews.com
A feed supplement that's given to beef cattle generates awful side effects when fed to horses, one trial has quickly demonstrated. Zilpaterol is a feed additive used for producing rapid weight and muscle gain in cattle. It has anabolic properties, similar to the steroids infamously taken by some athletes to build muscles and give them a performance edge.
In the trial conducted by scientists at North Dakota State University, three healthy horses were fed zilpaterol. The horses' physical response was almost immediate. Within 25 minutes after taking zilpaterol, the horses became restless, started sweating profusely and developed muscle tremors. A few minutes later, their heart rates climbed.
Muscle tremors lasted for a week and the rapid heart rates lasted for up to two weeks before returning to normal. Blood tests revealed indications of muscle damage. One horse also apparently suffered kidney damage.
The horses received just two doses of zilpaterol before researchers halted the trail. Fortunately, by three weeks after their ordeal began all the horses had recovered without requiring any medical treatment.

What about the Testoterone that is still being drip fed week by week to these horses.the NHA should get off its backside and ban them totally. I am appalled by the horses I see week in and week out that walk into our parade rings on ANABOLIC STEROIDS and the trainers that puff out their chests in the winners interviews having cheated to get these results.Stop this misuse NHA and show u really care:
