Because there are so few early 2yo races in Joburg these days? As we've discussed on another thread.

magic
maybe i dont see it your way
why run? WHY do they both have to run NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what diffs does it make how many races there are? surely if they both got scope you run 1 and ease offthe other for later in the season, then you got a line?
APART from declaring your hand i cant see value in running both at all? and certainly not in the wrong one shortening....

The truth of the matter is that the horses have two different sets of owners, and both sets of owners wanted their horse to run. The fact that there are so few 2yo races in Gauteng at present was a contributing factor. Opinions in the Peter clan were divided about which was the better of the two, because while Cellarmaster does show superior ability at home Denzarox had the experience and ran an absolute cracker first time out. You may be interested to know that Richard Fourie (who until very recently was well acquainted with Justin Snaith's 60-off 2os) was raving about Denzarox after today's race and reckoned that he's possibly better than any of the Snaith babies at this stage.
The other thing is that, as Paul Peter said in his interview afterwards, all of the stable's horses are sent out trying, every time. I freely admit that I have become very friendly with Paul and Johnny Peter (note: not Peters) and will stake my bottom dollar that that is the absolute truth. Being a big punter does not automatically make one a liar or a cheat.
Oh, and if Cellarmaster had won no doubt somebody would have been on here in a flash, accusing the stable of pulling Denzarox up. Sure, somebody got stung with Cellar Master. Sh!t happens - but there was no skulduggery involved and there were perfectly valid reasons (beyond trying to fool the market, which in itself is not exactly a crime anyway) why both horses ran in the same race. Both horses had their backers, and the one with the experience came out tops. Time will tell whether Denzarox remains a better horse than his stable companion, but he won like a good 2yo today. On merit.

Mathew
I personally dont have an issue with the "coup" side of things. As for the lack of races, there are floats around.
Now onto my original comment " 2 talented 2 year olds" i just dont get it.
INVHO this was a lose lose situation even more so now that Fourie rates the winner so highly.
Many a good horse have been undone by a challenge that they could have avoided.

Re: Re: Why Run

I merely reiterated what was said to me. Both owners wanted their horse to run, and they got their wish. One set is happier than the other with the outcome, but that's racing.
Travelling long distance with 2yos is not necesarrily the wisest option, although it can and has been done. In the case of today's event, the fact that the horses in question were racing on their home course and didn't have to travel anywhere at all may also have influenced the respective owners' decision to take the plunge. At least one group of owners was always going to be disappointed, but they no doubt had their reasons for taking the chance. You are free to believe that it was unwise, but at least their reasons were honest.
