My late uncle always spoke fondly about the biggest win in his punting days.It concerned a triple prediction in the July Handicap. He predicted the first 3 in the correct order by way of Monasterevan ,Thorium and Lochiel. The bet was 7000 pounds to 100 pounds. The numbers ,which i still play today, were 7 by 5 by 12.

Had a Pick Six running at Milnerton, only two tickets left in the last leg and we had one of them. Our own horse had average form and at the last minute in the que we decided to add her in....instead of just adding her in we took one out...and guess what...THAT WON.To make matters worse the 2 others we never had in ran 2nd and 3rd.....that error cost us abt R600K.....

I was still a lighty at school, and every weekend my father would go fishing and on alternate weekends us boys had to stay at home and look after the animals. This was 1974 ... I was at school in the south of JHB and in class with Robbie Shams cousin.. on Friday morning he told me Robbie was on a 'good thing' in the 2nd leg of the jackpot...Cover Crop. Friday night Uncle Bert (who was going fishing with my dad) gave me R2 and asked me to play a birthday jackpot for him as 'I knew more about horse racing than him' as he put it. Before he left he told me his brother-in-law, Alec Uzent had a horse in the last called Page Boy which I saw was part of a three way coupling. In the 2nd last there was an odds on favourite named Double Haig... but I was mad about Get Cracking at 12/1... so that left me just one leg to find, the first leg which was also the feature race and first leg of the Jackpot.. I took four horses ( Distinctly won the race, the favourite).. Robbie arrived on Cover Crop 12/1... we then ran all the way down to Turffontein and climbed into the tower closest to the finish to watch the next two races... as the runners in the 2nd last came past us Double Haig hit the front with two horses chasing.... one of them Get Cracking... as we were no where near the winning line we did not know what won... then ...1st 12- Get Cracking. What a long half hour to the last race... as they came past us, Page Boy was battling but stable companion Kebbelle was going great guns, and duly won.
That night we clustered around the valve set to listen to the 7h30 news on Hiveldt where they gave the payouts... R15 800 (or so).. we phoned the police station at Barrage to go find my father we were so excited... anyway there is a good sequel to this story but another time...

It was 1974, I worked at Makro, Fishershill. The manager played the gigis. Every Wednesday he sent me to the Tab in Germiston to put on the Jackpots and pa's.Everyone in the store gave their tickets to me to put on. One Indian chap gave me 50c to play a jackpot for him. At a robot in Primrose I stopped next to a Merc sports, two door, with sunroof down. The blonde in the Merc was ...jummy!!!. When we took off she waved at me, and sped off. My Fiat tried to chase her but all in vain.
Heart beating, trying to hall her in and get a phone number...at least I got her car reg no: 8985 (will never forget the numbers till the day I die). At the Tab I played all tickets, it was a hell of a lot, as nearly a hundred staff punted!!.Leaving the rooms, I remembered the Indian chaps 50c. I turned back and filled in a jackpot, 8985.
Back at Makro we got the results on radio after each race.
The result of the jackpot..8985!!! Dividend R9000.00. The Indian chap gave me 10% = R900.00. With R300.00 I saved over 2 years, and my 10% (R900) I bought a brand new Toyota, for R1200.00.
The Indian chap bought 4 Vw Combis, and started his own transport business, transporting staff from Benoni to Makro and Hyperama, Germiston.

Ah so many memorable moments...
By my username, unsurprisingly, I got hooked into horseracing while watching my dad go crazy about MODEL MAN. I was 7 years old when he ran second in the July. My dad backed him every time he ran, and made good money when the dogs (enchanted garden, singing biy etc) ran second and third in the trifectas.
When his first crop as a sire started running I followed them, but I was only 12 and still too small to back them - but i told myself that when I start working I will put big money on all his "model children".
Amberpondo, Special preview, private reserve all won in my high school years. In 1998 I began varsity and my parents would give me allowance - and every Saturday I would play my pick 6 and back any of his horses. When Glamour Boy won the Classic in 1999, I had R50 on it, and at 5/1 I was a larney, man
I told myself that I would one day buy a horse by model man and call it "Actuarial model" after my profession.
When I started work in 2002, I had a fantastic time backing all of Legality, Fallon (when he won the Nursery and paid R104 for a win), Prototype, easyjadeasy, African appeal, la diablesse, tailormade, ethereal lady and eddington (on debut even).
Everytime I look at the fields, I check for Model man progeny first. All my memorable moments in horseracing revolved around Model man - and now that his progeny are few and far between - I am sure that my interest in this sport will wane - but in the mean time I will back every one that runs.
So cheers to Model Man - my favourite in any race!!
