I remember that at Kempton, very scary for the horse. Thanks heavens he came out alive and that lake was populated by ducks and swans and not a huge croc waiting for a meal :woohoo:

Because of his work he also knew a lot of doctors, so he met a Dr Khoury, who had horse with Hennie van Wyk. He met Hennie and also supplied him with his mix.
At the time, I think it was 1975/76 Rhys was in the jockeys academy and he was coming up to JHB to take a few ride for his farther.
so they set up this coup.
Those days the daily double on the tote was on the 3rd and 4th race.
So in the 3rd race Rhys was on a horse for Dr. Khoury and in the fourth race he was ,I think, riding a horse for his farther.
I can't remember what the odds was but I do remember that they were not favorites.
So Rhys won with both horses, his first two winners.
I am not sure how much they won but it was quite a bit, when my dad came home he had pockets full of money, I remember he bought a new car for my mom cash the following week.

Because my farther was a medical rep he was away from home often
left Monday morning came back Friday
He had a friend who also was in the same profession, he was a very well know scrumhalf for the Transvaal Rugby union as well as Springbok.
As he was in towns in the country side he was not always in a position to play his Jackpot
so one night he phones up his friend and ask him if he could play a JP for R12 for him, no problem the friend said he will play it x 2, one for himself as well.
The race meeting was a Wednesday @ The Vaal
In one of the legs was a massive outsider, the horse called Zachirias, owned by a Mr. Jos Matthyssen, who had bus company in Vereeniging, was still a maiden entered in a D division.
The horse won @50/1 plus in one of the other legs another outsider won.
That evening my Dad listen to the results on Radio Hoeveld, the ticket has won, only two winners, and paid R240 000, for 1975 it was massive.
So the next morning my farther phoned him, only to hear that he claims he never played it.
But two months latter he and a well know flyhalf for the same union and also Springbok opened up a Big sport shop in Vereeniging
only to close doors 12 months later.

I don't have stories right now but I have snippets of memories:
1: the BIG toppie at he door of Loveday Tatts stopping us from getting in
2: Xavier - owned by the Leishers
3: Martin Sham bookmaker in loveday Street layed me 20/1 a Roberto Sasso ridden horse and laughed while asking me if I wanted another R10 on at 25/1 , I did and Sasso delivered. Martin was fuming
4: Bruce (worked for Bill Ferguson) when he labelled one, well race over
5: Chips Massalla at the shop next to lovely Tatts
6: Zoro and Derek the deadliest punters for a long time
7: Warren Zaki overtook Derek and Zero and became a legend (assisted by his brother Frankie)
8: Ian Lightfoot on one setup by James Goodman
9: Dougie and Pierre fighting for the jockeys title
10: Brutus winning for Stanley Ferreira
11: Budwin Nassif promising Frikkie Vermaak an AMG if he won the SA nursery (Don Habib won it with Goldmark)
12: Upstairs at Q's supper club on a Thursday night lots of racing people and Eddie the barman always had a winner
13: Empress Club
14: Sloop
15: The best Dressed lady on any racecourse in the world....I think it was Mr Josephs daughter, a Lebanese lady....cant recall the name
16: Kundalini winning for Hilda Podlas
17: 31st December , last race of the year at Greyville and Marlon Aromstan has a horse running. We back it from 9/2 into 8/10 BRING on the new year

8 years 2 weeks agoismikle wrote: I was still a lighty at school, and every weekend my father would go fishing and on alternate weekends us boys had to stay at home and look after the animals. This was 1974 ... I was at school in the south of JHB and in class with Robbie Shams cousin.. on Friday morning he told me Robbie was on a 'good thing' in the 2nd leg of the jackpot...Cover Crop. Friday night Uncle Bert (who was going fishing with my dad) gave me R2 and asked me to play a birthday jackpot for him as 'I knew more about horse racing than him' as he put it. Before he left he told me his brother-in-law, Alec Uzent had a horse in the last called Page Boy which I saw was part of a three way coupling. In the 2nd last there was an odds on favourite named Double Haig... but I was mad about Get Cracking at 12/1... so that left me just one leg to find, the first leg which was also the feature race and first leg of the Jackpot.. I took four horses ( Distinctly won the race, the favourite).. Robbie arrived on Cover Crop 12/1... we then ran all the way down to Turffontein and climbed into the tower closest to the finish to watch the next two races... as the runners in the 2nd last came past us Double Haig hit the front with two horses chasing.... one of them Get Cracking... as we were no where near the winning line we did not know what won... then ...1st 12- Get Cracking. What a long half hour to the last race... as they came past us, Page Boy was battling but stable companion Kebbelle was going great guns, and duly won.
That night we clustered around the valve set to listen to the 7h30 news on Hiveldt where they gave the payouts... R15 800 (or so).. we phoned the police station at Barrage to go find my father we were so excited... anyway there is a good sequel to this story but another time...
See ...here it is.

Owned a share in a horse - MIGHTY ASSASSIN - great debut then off run- go into the ring third start and a Woolly Mammoth looked clean shaven compared to this guy - Then he starts to sweat - buckets(actually enough to make those in the Cape think the rains have come!!) - more sweat - on course presenter is Julie and she comments on this also but likes his form - I start cursing as i've taken 14-1 - Partners console me and assure me he's a runner - I don't have another bet - He wins easy and I'm left shaking my head as If I had not taken my bets early I would never have had a cent on him!

2004 having leased a horse Kaduna River from Mr D Makins . He ran at the Vaal sand having won their previously and this time he was at least 3 lengths clear going through the 100 when he broke down but continued on to finish 6 and had to be put down . Standing in the tattersalls i was already spending my winnings when this happened . Now I only celebrate after they have passed the winning line.
