I have been priveleged to see it and it's strong, old-fashioned moviemaking, at its best, even though the storyline could do with some trimming. The trench sequences, involving a terrified horse, galloping loose, are stunning and the film has been nominated for a Best Cinematography Academy Award, but it probably has no chance of being adjudged Best Film, even though it's among the 10 nominated. The stage version won six Tony Awards on Broadway and a special award was made to South Africa's Handspring Puppet Company for the incredible, wickerwork horses, which are each manipulated by four men and are actually ridden by the actors on stage. By all accounts the stage version is more impressive than the film but I was thoroughly entertained and often moved by the Spielberg film, in which the horses are magnificent and the young lead actor, Jeremy Irvine, is superb.
