I have a rule never to bet unless I am on course. Like all rules it has its exceptions, e.g. the July. But I take along X amount when I go to the course and once its gone its gone.
I do it like some people bungee-jump (see previous thread) ... for the thrill of waiting for the result ... and also because it gives me an ego-boost when I'm right in judging the horses. Eg (boast, boast!) I backed Fairytale Story for a place at Scottsville recently because ... I reckoned the horse was better than it seemed and it came oh so close to winning. Paid R5.30/place on the tote. Paid for my afternoon's entertainment. But I'd never dream of punting for anything other than entertainment.

Formed my character -
1. Taught me to focus on the now (previous race is over, focus on this race)
2. Taught me financial management (only invest a max of 10% of my pool on any bet.
3. Taught me to think multi dimensional vs linear thinking (backing a horse for win, place, float in quartet, P3, P6 etc - all with the same horse as part of the investment.
4. Taught me to respect other's opinions - some are good, some are great as they follow up their opinions with putting their money down.
5. Made me street wise - never learned any of this at varsity.
6. Build courage based on success over the years.
7. Learned to deal with disappointment in a swift manner.
8. Understand that racing industry is same as investment banking - binary trading.
9. Cheaper to buy a girlfriend than a racehorse - lol

EVERYBODY had their first bet intending to win. When punters eventually realise they are not part of the successful 5%,they have 2 options............ give up or justify continuation by "I don't do it for profit".
Most choose the second cos they are hooked, but with that attitude, they can't fail.
However, the truth is,none of the punters I know, that do it for fun, ever stop trying to make a profit............lol

I enjoy it and it comes with a added bonus of excitement and monetary gain ( not all the time ). You also get to meet some interesting characters along the way. I love Punting Yeh.
