Moments in Horse Racing

thought it might be a good idea to start a thread where we can all post some interesting races from the past...

The race I thought the best ever was Politician winning his 2nd Met. Could not get through until very late but then he showed what a champion he was. Unbelievable run.

Craig, i saw the re-run of this race not too long ago..........i must agree, that was awesome.

PS - i never congratulated you on French Reef the other evening. Well done Craig and all the best!

Roberto winning the Derby or should I say Piggott

I was also going to say Politician's 2nd Met win. I saw it on TV ... one of the first races I saw on the (rather new ... for us in SA) facility of Television. I can still see in my mind's eye that dragon-like head cutting through what looked like an impossible wall of horses ... from a hopeless position ... remember shouting with shock and then with admiration ... that was the most exciting race I ever saw in my younger days.

The second was many years later ... but also an Surely-Impossible win ... Jay Peg in Dubai 2008, winning the Dubai Duty Free. The same race when Anton Marcus nearly came off in front of another wall of horses ... it could so easily have been another sort of "Moment", a tragic moment. From the horse's point of view, though, the race of his life ... he was headed in the straight after leading from the start, and came back to win in a race record time.

Btw, Pat Cummings has this as #2 in his Moments of the Decade (Dubai Race Night website), after Dubai Millenium's win of the World Cup in 2000.

IPI Tombi winning the July some years back - i watched one of his earlier races where he was 1/5 on and winning by a huge margin, told all family and friends months in advance that IPI would win the July, watching that race on that day is unforgettable especially the way in which the race ended.

Wonder if we could get the Poltiician win on here have only really seen the finish..

Lester Piggot on a horse for JBK Cooper "The Malster" at Scottsville lost many many lengths at the start and got up to win..He swore at the starter and picked up a fine but that was vintage Piggott, I did my tom but found myself shouting him home

Remember that titch, plus he also had a great ride on Swan Prince?
