Railrider won on July day and then again the following Friday night, but that was before I bought him. He did win for us at Greyville just before the Gold Cup meeting, though, if I remember rightly. He did have a testicle problem in that he had only one when we bought him. He was (rightly) catalogued as a 6yo horse and that may have put some potential buyers off who thought he was some sort of wild-eyed stallion.

In fact, never a kinder horse has ever lived. We gelded him straight after buying him (no idea why that wasn't done earlier) and he was so docile at home that even Laff's very young daughter could ride him (when he was still in training).

I love reading stories like this! What's the biggest bargain, do you reckon, bought at a small sale, not one of the big blue-blood sales?

My reserve on Elle Rassa was R50k. She is a good sort and R25K was way off the target. She will continue to race on for us. In fact carded to run on Sunday. She has a few more in the tank

Cheers

We bought Finvarra last year for R7k. He won for us second time out. When we put him over more ground we realised he had a breathing problem. we had the op done for R6k and he has won again and placed a few times behind some useful sorts. He is getting stronger and more confident with every race.

A couple of years back we bought Chase The Cheers with St John for R15K. He won us almost R200k including a hat trick of wins. He was exciting to own.

We bought lots 58, 107 and 120. A Silvano, a Western Winter and an Overlord all for R90K.

These HIT sales get you in the game quickly thats why I like them. I would have a lot of fun if they brought claimimg races back.

I bought Shalako for R22k at Shongweni three years ago and he's still going strong. Three years is a lot of mileage to get out of a horse bought on this type of sale. At one stage he won us two races in three days, after we nearly gave up on him before he won us even one race. As I;ve posted on another thread, the canny old bugger seems to come alive every time we even mention the word "retirement." :D He's running on Tuesday and if he runs the same race he did last time he could well win, but with him that's a pretty big "if."

Hibs, I remember the horse Pass The Line. I think he was bought for beer money and won a big 2yo Feature at Gosforth Park, when the connections had the only winning Pick 6 ticket, or something along those lines.

Orange, I couldn't agree with you more re claiming races. I claimed a total of four horses when they had them in Cape Town and won with all four of them, including my first winner. Admittedly, they all only won me one race each (including the second last race ever run at Bloemfontein), but at least they won. I remember Herman Brown claiming Sleek Wine out of one of the very few claiming races we ever had in Durban and she then wentt and won the Garden Province Stakes - a Gr 1, no less!
