I saw on Mnet the making of a movie called The Cup it seems to be an Australian horseracing/jockey/Melbourne Cup film looks pretty good. I wonder when it will be out or if it's out already, anyone know anything about it?

Not likely if the premiere was last week.

The movie was directed by Simon Wincer, the man who also directed the superb "Phar Lap", some years ago, but this is apparently not in the same league. It's the story of Damien Oliver's Melbourne Cup win for Irish trainer, Dermot Weld, aboard Media Puzzle, but it's been savaged by the critics around the world (including Oz, where it was made). However, I have met a few people who have seen it and really enjoyed it. As far as I know, it's not available on DVD as yet.
There have been some great racing movies over the years, going right back to "National Velvet", made long before the days of CGI (and it shows, though it remains hugely entertaining), but the best, subsequently, have been "Champions" (the story of Bob Champion and Aldaniti), "Phar Lap", "Seabiscuit" and "Secretariat", all of which offer very entertaining and enlightening viewing. The Sea Cottage story has more inherent drama than any of them and it's one of my son, Aidan's longer term goals to make a feature film on Sea Cottage's shooting before the 1996 Rothmans Durban July, once he finally manages to get his opus on the history of SA racing and its heroes ("Legends") finished. That is proving a marathon task, with lack of funding from the racing industry, which stands to benefit enormously, having been the main problem... a crying shame, because even in its unfinished state it is riveting.
