Jack Dash, I am keen to know how many horses costing 1Mil + have actually RECOOPED their cost price. I would hazzard a guess that maybe 30 % have actually recooped their purchase price.
If my figures are anywhere near correct, then that tells you to be weary of buying horses 1 Bar plus, cause your chances of recooping that outlay is minimal.
I have great pleasure in having shares of horses costing 50 - 100 g, that way you don't burn your fingers, & THEN RACING CAN BE FUN, & you / your trainer / your jock are not constantly under pressure to RECOOP.
AH, I've had a small share in a horse costing 250,000............. he won his first race & NEVER AGAIN........I've paid my school fees, I've learned my lesson !

how many of your 50-100's have become group performers?? obv not all expensive horses are going to be good but the more expensive the better chance of having a good horse..yes JJ cost 70k and jet master cost less and yes there are others but im sure the percentage of group horses are higher the higher the fee of the horse

Elvis, I guess the first question should be how many horses earn their purchase price period.
The difference between a 50K horse and a 150K horse is pretty clear, just looking at the numbers you have an idea what's going on.
Once you get to say 800K, would you know anymore more if it sold for 900K?
A small sample of horses sold showed that about 13% would win 5 or more races.
Of them, 70% cost +200K, which tells you that the breeding and conformation which causes some horses to cost more than other, is a very significant pointer to ability. This is even more of a pointer given that the group of cheaper and unsold horses is much bigger than the more expensive horses.
It's a fact that you are more likely to find a good horse from a selection that costs more. The fact that very expensive horses often can't recoup their purchase prices is of very little consequence when you are trying to buy a proper horse. Fieldspring for example bought 2 July winners and had the favourite for another July (who they bred I think) which would be almost impossible if you are buying horses below a certain value because you are cut off from winning sires, female lines and conformation.
A mazda can do pretty much everything important that a porche can do . Why do you think you could sway the porche owner to buy a mazda with an argument the it uses less petrol and the insurance is keeper and it's there foregot to be more fun? You probably find that more porches are pranged too, the next thing you gonna argue is the mazda is safer too.
Even though we know when you win a decent sized Pick 6 on a straight line it took 99% luck and 1% skill, we should maybe also look at "which horses that cost almost zilch earned nearly as much as top priced yearlings" in the same spirit.
I suppose Jet Master is the ultimate straight liner we'll ever see. 15K, as a weanling..not even a yearling, Champion amoung champion racehorses, multiple Champion sire and probably most significant horse ever bred here. We wont see that again.
PS
I would be utterly shocked if 30% of million+ horses earned their prices back.

I specialize in finding true value. I look for the oddities that do not have commercial appeal but have genetic potential....have a few for up coming sale and already know in which stables they will land up....
