Rowdy I do agree with you , however they have rules at the start of the season to define how the championship will be won and maybe this needs revisited ?

We did have discussions on the forum re: strike rates etc but consider u could have a jock with 3 rides for the year and wins one and the 33% could make him the champ?

I am sure trainers are settled on prize money?

they know the rules and if Marcus isn't hungry enough to travel, then that's his problem!

Strike rate is deceptive when a jock rides a lot and will obviously drop when one rides 1000+ in a season but surely that is indicative of who the hardest worker is and who wants it the most,with Anton riding for Charles Laird and Anthony for De Kock as base yards what option do the other guys have but to travel in order to be competitive...dont forget that even Muis Roberts traveled to Zim to win his title and the Zim option is open to all, the fact that only some are prepared to take that option should be applauded...........GO GAV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As with past jockeys, Gavin is playing to the rules and should now win. He is dedicated and has worked very hard but, has or will the best jockey be crowned champion?

they should drop the Zim rides next year - Zim is not a province of South Africa - Why not count Mauritus rides too? A loophole that needs stoping

Looking at the Championship, anyone who wins deserves to win because it is one tough hard year of hard work. But in saying so, the statistics as of 19/07/2012 which excludes yesterday's PE and Greyville is as follows:

Gavin Lerena
Rides = 1001
Wins = 190
% Win = 19%

Anton Marcus
Rides = 625
Wins = 184
% Win = 29%

Anthony Delpech
Rides = 881
Wins = 179
% Win = 20%

Gavin leads Anton by six but has ridden 376 more rides than Anton. On a numbers game and assuming that the rides were equal and each rider maintained their win percentage, Marcus would have an extra 109 more wins based on his win strike rate. Take nothing away from Gavin, Marcus to me is would win this championship hands down if he rode the same amount of rides as Gavin.

It's not over yet and I don't believe that Marcus will give up that easily. He might still have an ace up his sleeve

Anton's last 6 winners have been for Charles Laird, MDK, Vaughn Marshall and Sean Tarry whilst Gavins last 6 winners have been for Wallace Tolmay, Clint Binda, Erica Verdonese,Corne Spies and Gav Smith..Anthony D has first choice for MDK so take away the Zim option and year in and year out it will be a 2 horse race,the only reason that AD and AM dont go to Zim is becoz they dont have to..i say good luck to those who put in the hard work to try be competitive,knocking them and making light of their achievements is offside imo

Tich I agree 100% with you as well. I personally think that those who put in the hard work should be rewarded for it and in Gavin's case he has made the sacrificases by travelling.

I would be interested to know how many winners of Gavin's 190 is from Zimbabwe. Do you know where we can get these numbers from
