William Inglis & Son Easter yearling sale
13 years 2 months ago
A son of Fastnet Rock topped the opening day of the William Inglis & Son Easter yearling sale April 10 in Australia. James Bester Bloodstock and Demi O’Byrne Bloodstock purchased the colt for Aust$1 million ($1,029,490 in U.S. funds) from Henry Field’s Newgate Farm.
The bay yearling is out of the New Zealand-bred Tale of the Cat mare Catreign, who captured the 2004 Toy Show Handicap in Australia. Robert and Barbara McClure of Morning Rise Stud bred the colt in Australia.
The results for the first session included a gross of Aust$27,426,000 ($28,234,800) for the 129 horses that were sold. The average price was Aust$212,605 ($218,875) and the median price was Aust$160,000 ($185,308). Compared to last year, when 137 yearlings were sold, the gross and average declined 16.8% and 11.7%, respectively. The median was down 11.1%.
The clearance rate fell to 73.7% from 81.5% in 2011.
The Bester/O’Byrne team was the biggest spender, paying Aust$2,585,000 ($2,661,230) for five horses.
“Clients from New Zealand, Ireland, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Hong King, Singapore, Macau, Japan, and all over Australia feature on the buyers list, making the best of this opportunity to buy into the best bred and conformed yearlings that Australia and New Zealand have to offer at Easter,” said Inglis managing director Mark Webster.

THE second session of the three-day Inglis Easter Sale in Sydney was lit up by the sale of Black Caviar's half-sister, who was bought by BC Thoroughbreds chief executive Bill Vlahos for A$2.6 million (£1,687,211/€2,045,988). Vlahos compared the purchase of the Redoute's Choice filly to acquiring "a piece of history".
The filly out of Helsinge proved to be very popular - Vlahos had to see off a resolute effort by Japanese interests to secure the half-sister to the world's highest rated sprinter.
Bidding opened at A$1 million dollars, before rising to A$1.5 million. Vlahos then went head to head with Japanese trainer Toshiaki Shirai, who was bidding on behalf of leading owner and breeder Katsumi Yoshida of Shadai Farm.
The A$2.6 million paid for the filly equalled the top price paid for a yearling filly at the sales in Australia. A record set in 2006 when a full-sister to Alinghi sold for A$2.6 million.
