Trippi's go for money. Not good looking horses I must say but they can run. So far I got 3 lots - lot 77 (Trippi) for R550K, lot 143 (Mullins Bay - De Kock says they can run a bit) for R100K and lot 206 (Trippi) for R300K. First 2 will go to Charles Laird and lot 206 to Gavin Smith. Tried very hard to get lot 34 (another Trippi) but had to get out at R700K. Also Sedge's brother (lot 205) I tried to get but had to jump out at R600K. Overall good sale for breeders and buyers but tomorrow will sell 2 lots - could pay for my purchases hopefully.

Homer - all the best with your purchases.
I got to nose around Summerhill a while back and have to say I was very impressed with what Mullins Bay is producing. I wish you well with yours.

Trippi does not sire good looking horses?
I guess this must be a case of "beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

I bought my partners out of the Captain Al filly, first foal of Spring Garland (G2 Gerald Rosenberg S.).
650,000 rand
Because I have a horse in the Ky Derby, I couldn't leave for the sale and it is killing me! I love this sale.

Nice buys Barry! I managed to get a VAR, National Assembly and Jay Peg on the last day (3 on the first day as well) - 6 in total. Now for the waiting game to see who can run and who can't!

Prices very low at this sale. Factor in inflation and it's even more exaggerated.
Highest price of R1.7m the lowest since 2003 (also R1.7m).
Average price of R233k the lowest since 2005 (R220k).
Also 62 (13.3%) lots not sold, worst since 2003 and only 2002 was worse as a % of lots on offer.
Marked difference from the peak in 2008 when there was a R3m top price, a R391k average and 7.2% not sold.
Combination of economy and the Cape Sale?

Based on CPI, R1.7 million in March 2003 is equivalent to R2.717 million today..

Sabre, let me put this in a different light for you.
Because of the auction rule changes, "not solds" or "buy backs" were more transparent, thus causing an increase in them as they were reported more frequently instead of buried in the results.
FYI, 13.3 percent buy backs in Europe or the USA is utterly fantastic.
We would love to have a clearance rate of 86.7 percent.
In light of the competition from the Cape sale, I would say that the TBA did better than expected, all things considered.
Selfishly, I would like just one major sale and I would like to see it take place on April 15.
I would love to come to just one sale, no matter how many days it lasts, and be able to see all of what So African has to offer.
Having a sale in January with the type of stock So Africa breeds is way too early to sell a yearling.
I know that Markus Jooste envisions creating a Magic Millions type of vendue in the Cape, but So Africans are not breeding pure sprinters to win the Golden Slipper Stakes.
I hope the TBA and the Cape crowd join forces and come up with something acceptable to all concerned.
