Wild Again Tops In Inaugural Classic
Wild Again, supplemented to the Breeders' Cup for a fee of $360,000 (12% of the $3 million purse), stunned favored Slew o' Gold and Preakness hero Gate Dancer to become the first winner of Thoroughbred racing's richest event. In one of the most memorable finishes in racing history, the three horses waged an intense battle for the lead throughout the stretch. After a steward's inquiry Gate Dancer was disqualified from second to third for interfering with Slew o' Gold. The winner's share of $1.35 million increased Wild Again's career earnings from $738,109 to $2,088,109.
