INTERBET FUNDS TRAINING OF PREVIOUSLY DISADVANTAGED APPRENTICE JOCKEY

Lerato Mohapi, a third year apprentice at the South African Jockey Academy, has landed a one-year sponsorship from South Africa’s leading online horseracing operator Interbet. Johnny Stark, Interbet’s founder, said his company was proud to be involved in an institution that over the 53 years of its existence had produced so many international champions and other world class riders. Stark said it was a privilege to sponsor a young black jockey as part of Interbet’s social development programme. He said he believed that Mohapi, who had no previous experience with horses or horse racing, was a fine young man who has shown the potential to be a top rider.
The sponsorship, worth R62 000, covers all Mohapi’s training and education fees for the year. Nineteen-year-old Mohapi was born in Chesterville near Durban and is one of 11 black apprentices currently at the academy. He has ridden to date 7 winners and 26 places from just 82 rides and is currently in his matric year.
Interbet is an on-line betting company where customers can have one account and bet with over 80 of South Africa’s leading bookmakers and on the tote, ensuring that customers always get the best odds, a unique concept in the world market. Interbet also sponsors the racing television channel Tellytrack as well as the horseracing magazine programme ‘Winning Ways’ presented by James Goodman and Paul Lafferty.
“Interbet is proud to be making a genuine contribution to racing and keeping up a strong relationship with the racing operators,” concluded Stark.
