VAAL SAND FACTS and FIGURES

COURSE VARIATIONS (CV) expressed in seconds per 1000m
29 MAY…0.40 FAST
24 MAY…0.90 FAST
10 MAY…1.80 FAST
24 APR…..0.70 FAST (Abandoned after 6 races)
05 APR.… 1.10 SLOW
27 MAR….1.10 SLOW
15 MAR.…0.50 FAST
01 MAR….0.50 FAST
16 FEB…..1.00 SLOW
31 JAN…..1.00 SLOW
19 JAN…..0.80 SLOW
12 JAN…..0.70 FAST

The first race regularly produces a cv figure significantly faster than any other race on that day, before the course settles / is settled down.

BARRIER DRAWS

The ‘going’ (cv’s) does not appear to affect draw statistics.

1000m – middle/lower draws now most favourable (3-8).
1200m – lower draws remain most favourable (1-6).
1450m – lower draws remain most favourable (1-6).
1600m – no distinct advantage.
1800m – no distinct advantage.

The biggest change over the last few years has been in the 1000m races…high draws no longer hold an advantage.

Whilst low draws remain favourable in the 1200 + 1450m races this advantage is not as significant as it used to be.

Running styles of the horses involved, along with past performances on the sand-relative to favourable/unfavourable draws, can be helpful when making selections.
