the scotsman is 100% correct. where will the new punters come from because they are not come from todays youngsters. the youngsters that punt today they are all in to poker because if is see as "cool". racing is for the old toppies. we are in big trouble

Slack says she does not care if her horses run infront of 300 or 3000 (not sure if it was 30 000) - That is why racing is in the state it's in - The rich don't care Racing is their little pleasure zone - but the punters have moved on and Rome burns 50 000 people in 1950 and now 50 000 in 2012 really growimng huh? (rember that the win bet is R6)

The difference mr H is that Greyville holds 50,000 so no more room to expand but the Summer Cup was also 50000 and now 15,000

But places like Bruma that used to be full on July day (you had to sit outside) empty - every company had a draw - July parties etc - Phumelela under it's masters have let Racing down (I was watching Rugby and saw an ad for the Rugby 5 bet so you can see where the focus lies) - Does the great Vodacom have a competition using it's cellphone network to Pick the July winner?(not sure if it's legal though) Have Vodacom made a top class advert to expose new people to the July(I see they have a host of "gees" ads for the Rugby) The best thing that could ever happen to the July would be if Vodacom moved on and a new Company got involved that was prepared to market that day with a General consumer product that 90% of the population used.

My apologies. The show was more positive than negative for racing SA.

MDK has his rose tinted glasses on for the interview but good for racing.

who ever arranged well done. Probably Aiden.

I wonder if all these frantic "recruiting" ideas really work? Every now and again some mad kite flyer, bungee jumper or stock car racer tries to entice me to their sport and I already have mine. It's taken years to acquire the experience and I'm not planning to go elsewhere to be a novice again.

The obvious way would be to look at parallel interests like share traders or other en devours which also use historic data. How the industry whines on and on and on about getting more punters, but gives no sectional timing and or other new or hi-tech data for the kids born into a world of cellphone and information processing, is just beyond me.

My wife has been passionate about horses since a child and platted racehorses in the pro yards since tall enough to stand on a bucket, but she thinks putting money on is for people who like the rush of losing. So the geegee set are useless.

It's the information age people, and unless you looking to make money out of the bar revenue at the races you will miss this generation who want to see the data. The film footage of the 1000's of gamblers at the races is from the past is really in the past. The real money is in digital accounts and doesn't fit in you wallets anymore. We still trying to get wallet people to the races, and that is why it will die.

I too blame the bookmaker. And the open bet. And the owners. And the jockeys. Who did I miss?

Glad the show resonated with some viewers. I had the pleasure of being the consultant/researcher on the programme, but there was probably about 2 hours of interview footage, from which they could have made five separate programmes, which had to be whittled down to 10 minutes. Anthony Delpech gave probably the best interview of his life, which will probably never be seen, and all the participants were excellent in their respective fields. Sadly it will all be consigned to the Carte Blanche vaults. But thanks to everyone who gave of their time. And to Sophia Phirripedes, the Producer, and Derek Watts, the presenter, who had become quite expert on racing by the time it was all in the can.

Don't ask me what's going to win, after getting up close and personal with many of the participants over the past week. Jackson looks like Usain Bolt next to the others, with the exception of Vettel, who's another stunner. But there's a lot to like about many of them.

Ilha Bela is jumping out of her skin, even though she's quite small, and I really liked her gallop, at Greyville.

Gorongosa is no oil painting, though she has a very pretty head, and she looks very businesslike.

Gary Alexander says PJ has never been better, or happier, during his three weeks at Summerveld - he's sound, working better than ever and is very laid back. You can watch an insert going out Wednesday to see how Sacha, Gary's four-year-old daughter, confidently marches up to him to feed him grass.

English Garden, likewise, has never been better and is seemingly completely free of his bleeding problems of the past. Robert Fay'dHerbe thinks he's going to run really well and I reackon he's a class act, judging by the way he won that Progress Plate at Greyville.

And you can't ignore Beach Beauty, who won the Greyville 1900 with ease. She's all heart and very talented, to boot, and her being leased by a syndicate made up of friends and relatives of her breeder's late son is the kind of fairytale story the July thrives on.

The Scott family is expecting a big run from Sage Throne, and his credentials are impressive. He's quite plain, compared to Jackson, but big and strong, with plenty of stamina. Great value for a place, though I hate the low payouts for six places.

But the question is, can Jackson win the Vodacom Durban July? I say yes, and I'd love to see him turn out to be a real superstar. Lenin was asked to carry 61,5 kg as a three-year-old in 1941, but he finished fifth behind Sadri II, who carried just 47,5 kg, and who went on to sire July winners, Gay Jane and C'est Si Bon. This year's July field is minus last year's heroine, though the second and third finishers will be there and they're formidable gallopers. 57 kg is a big ask and the draw won't be easy to overcome, but there hasn't been a horse as powerful or good looking as Jackson compete since Dynasty, his sire, in 2003.

There's hardly a horse in the race which doesn't have some claim to winning it but Jackson could prove to be in a different league to the opposition and defy all that's conspired to prevent victory.
