Worcester J/pot last leg today is a 1 horse race

It may look like the race of the day but it is likely to end up as a no contest.
A field of 12 was declared for the partex-direct.co.uk Novices’ Hurdle at Worcester. All are recent winners but a walkover is now expected after trainers decided to use the race as a ploy and will boycott it in a protest over the low prize money.
The race falls £900 below the level set out in the Horsemen's Group tariff and the trainers – among them Nicky Henderson, Donald McCain and Philip Hobbs – have taken this action after the racecourse executive of the council-owned track refused to change their stance.
Charlie Mann, the Lambourn-based trainer, has led the campaign and he said to The Times: "Twenty-two trainers, including all the top names, agreed to the boycott. I have been delighted by the response and we have all entered decent horses on the basis that they will not take part.
"Twelve were balloted out and the likelihood is that we will leave one horse in the race, so that the prize money from a walkover will be pooled to pay the fines we get.
"We had planned a similar boycott at Fontwell recently but they acted to get the race concerned up to tariff, so we didn't do it. Worcester only had to put up an extra £900 to avoid this but chose not to do so."
Worcester is owned by the recently amalgamated Arena and Northern Racing Group. Ian Renton, director of racing for the new company, said: "It is disappointing that trainers have targeted such a well-meaning course which is doing all it can in the circumstances. Since the downgrading of the levy in 2009, Worcester has suffered a 60% reduction in daily contributions.
"We have put virtually all our income into prize money and we aim to meet the tariffs in all races next year."
Hobbs, the next president of the National Trainers' Federation, admitted that he was not happy at taking such a militant approach but saw little alternative.
"I'm a little uncomfortable and would rather not go to these lengths, but we needed to do something," he said. "Arena have recently had an enormous rise in their media rights income but prize money continues to fall. They can definitely do better. Worcester hoping to meet tariff next year just isn't good enough."

The prize money is low surely because fewer people are punting on the horses. Bookies cant be creaming it cos their margins have never been tighter. One day there wont be any racing to protest. A sign of the times.
