2012 Young Guns Challenge
2009 saw the inaugural running of the Asian Young Guns Challenge at Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia. The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) conducted this Apprentice Jockeys Race Series with the concept of giving leading apprentices from overseas an exposure to the Australian Racing scene and similarly selected Australian Apprentice Jockeys from Victoria will visit other racing countries under this agreement. The 2nd running of this Challenge was staged by the Singapore Turf Club (STC) at Kranji Racecourse and in 2011 the series returned to Flemington Racecourse.
This year, the 4th running of the Asian Young Guns Challenge will be in Macau. The Macau Jockey Club (MJC) is honored to have the opportunity to host this prestigious event.
The 2012 Asian Young Guns Challenge will be conducted as a three race series for leading apprentice riders from Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa and Macau on Saturday, 4th August at Taipa Racecourse twilight racemeeting.
The selected races for international apprentices are:
· Rating 70-50/ 1,100 metres/ Turf/ Purse HK$295,000
· Rating 50-20/ 1,800 metres/ Turf/ Purse HK$210,000
· Rating 60-40/ 1,350 metres/ Sand/ Purse HK$240,000
Points will be allocated for all horses finishing in the first 8 placing, ranging from 25 points for a win to 1 point for 8th placing during the series and a presentation will follow at the completion of the series.
CONDITION of CHALLENGE:
If a horse is scratched after acceptance time, and an emergency replacement horse is not available, the affected rider shall be allotted 6 points. This is equivalent to half-way between 4th & 5th placing.

Ng Ka Chun (Hong Kong)
Taichi Nishimura (Japan – JRA)
Shinsuke Ishikawa (Japan - NRA)
Seungun Seo (Korea)
Yazid Kamal (Malaysia)
Zawari Razali (Singapore)
Keagan De Melo (South Africa)
Jake Noonan (Australia)
Jason Collett (New Zealand).
(The Macau representatives will be advised in due course.)
Apart from race riding, the visiting apprentices are also invited to participate in a variety of non-raceday activities, ranging from track work at MJC, tours featuring Macau cultural heritage, and experiencing other aspects of the Macanese culture.
