Lucian Africa banned for 4 weeks

The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an Inquiry held in Durban on 8 June 2012, adjourned and resumed and concluded on 13 August 2012, Jockey L Africa was charged with a contravention of Rules 77.1.1 and 77.2.8, in that a urine specimen taken from him at Clairwood Racecourse on 20 December 2011, disclosed upon analysis the presence of codeine, which is an opiate, and a prohibited substance in terms of the Rules of The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa.



Mr Africa pleaded guilty to and was found him guilty of the charge.



The Inquiry Board imposed a suspension from riding in races for a period of four weeks. The Board, having considered the evidence lead in mitigation, suspended two weeks of the penalty for a period of twelve months on condition that Mr Africa is not found guilty of contravening the same Rule during that period.



Mr Africa has the right of appeal against the penalty imposed.

The problem is the authorities are not reminding the jockeys about tablets with codeine and not and with no disrespect to most jockeys they don't know it's a disgrace that this jockey was suspended I lived on myprodol for my back and I have never done drugs I condone them at the heights lever the jockey club are at falt and Need to explain to the minorities about these simple drugs they are taking its a disgrace

These are the same set regulations that made it a technical breach to train a horse using an electronic timing device when the intention was the banning of the "electric whip"
It is beyond belief that they have not managed to review the rules in spite of admitting that it was overdue some years ago,bearing how important it is for racing's image to be seen to be well policed and sensibly regulated.

The medicine Lucian took was prescribed by the on-course doctor a meeting before the test and Lucian forgot to declare it when he signed off after his sample was taken.

Adco-Dol, Syndol, Lenadol. OTC pain-killers with codeine. I think urine sample should be tested immediately and if positive followed by a blood test. The quantity of the drug is probably more important than the positive result...
