Leading apprentice Chad Schofield, son of former SA rider Glyn, is set to join David Hayes’ team at Euroa in country Victoria on a three-month loan.
The 18-year-old, who won the premiership by 15 wins over Sam Clipperton last season, was available for rides from yesterday.
“David (Hayes) approached me to see whether I would be interested in joining his team on loan,’’ Schofield told couriermail.com.au. “I’ve been down to Euroa and ridden there a few times and I think it’ll be a great opportunity. It’ll give me a chance to gain more experience. At this stage it’s only on loan and I’ll be coming back to Sydney.’’
While based at Euroa, he will also be required to ride track work from Hayes’ satellite stable at Flemington.
“I think it’ll be beneficial for both parties,’’ Hayes said. “I’ve been watching him for several months now and I’ve got a lot of respect for him. He’s a talented young rider.’’
Hayes said Schofield’s claim would be extremely valuable for the stable in the coming months.
“We don’t have a superstar horse here but we have a lot of nice horses on the rise who will be getting into races with lightweights and when you can claim on top of that it is certainly ideal,’’ Hayes said.
The championship title came in 18-year-old Schofield jun’s first full year of riding.
