Need help with food and clothing bank
12 years 9 months ago
I am approaching the forum today with a request for help. If admin feels this is not appropriate for this forum they are welcome to remove this thread
Back ground
A year ago I was sitting at home and I have just lost some money again and out of the blue it hit me I am losing money but out there there are people who do not have food clothing money etc.
So I decided I will still do my punting but I will also help people who are in need of help.
So, for the past year, with the help off my wife and a friend we started a feeding scheme where we prepare food and then every Friday morning we go to a place were casual day workers gather and wait for someone who need casual labour.
For some off them it is the only decent warm meal they get for the week.
these people are people just like you and me they also have families, needs dreams etc but some off them might get a job in once a week sometimes once every two weeks sometimes once a month , they normally get between R80 -R100 per day, how much food can they get for that?
.
One day while I was standing there i realized that we now are feeding the men but what about their wife's and children at home who also need food because if this person is the bread winner and he do not have a job what are they living on? so i asked them what to they do for food, so it transpired that although their neighbors do not have much themselves some times they will club in and buy a packet of mielie meel and that is what they eat a bowl of mielie meel once a day.(I really feel bad to see how we sometimes can waste food but out there there are men women and children who go to bed, if they have one, with out food)
What we also did is, Me the wife and the kids went through our cupboards and we took out all the old clothes that we do not wear anymore and we also started handing them out for the dads do take it home and you can not imagine how great full they are for that the one guy told us his kid put on the clothes and wouldn't take it off for a week so glad he was for his "new" clothes.
WHAT DO WE NEED?
I am thinking if we can put together a little food parcel that the men can take home, maybe a small packet of sugar, mielemeel a small tin of coffee a few bags of tea and say 7 cans of bully beef or other canned/boxed meat source like soya. ( the women folk can advise here) and we can wrap it together with cling wrap ( make it easy to carry home)
Then if you can go to your cupboards and send us all your old clothes we (and the men, women and children) will be great full.
I know what some people will say, they will say that we will give them the food and clothes and they will sell it for money which they will then use to buy booze, but I can tell you that 95% will not do that so I do not want to stop this because of the 5% who might do that.
I am looking forward to the forum's response for my quest for help. Any advice/help will be welcome.
I do thank you in advance for helping me to take this cause to a new level.

What a admiral gesture and good deeds you are performing. Some advice is to either approach your local supermarket or write to their head office and ask for food donations as they throw out millions of pounds/rands worth of food away every year. Supermarkets throw out bent or scratched tin food.
Next time you go shopping grab a handful of shopping plastic bags as use them to put the food pack in.
Place a small ad in your local weekly paper and people will respond.
Also approach farmers especially fruit farmers as they just throw away the apples etc that are bruised which are not used for human consumption and the apples which are not used for cider making. Potato farmers as well will help. You will be suprised. Also approch chicken farmers for eggs and farm stalls for their throw outs.
