Yes it does sound too fancy, I think. Suits the soccer players better what with the likes of "dancing shoes" Hartze. "Ace" ntsolengoe,"computer" Lamola etc.

If I was a Jockey I would retaliate with my own 'nickname' for those presenters that think they are so farking clever. Lets give them some nicknames to assist the young Jocks to use.
Yes Hibernia I agree that we are talking of youngsters but I think it uncalled for on the Tele. This can be kept for private use IMO. But the again I might just be an old fart that believes in tradition and discipline, oh shit the wife is calling so I have to go now. LOL might get lucky.

In banter or an interview maybe use a nickname. When calling them down to the start lets hear the real name. I have never heard Clyde,Jehan or even Sheldon refer to a jockey by anything but his real name during the canter past. Trivial nonsense, I will leave it now (
)
Titch,
Arthur Marcus, Muzi across the Yeni, Jurrasic Park etc were all coined by the same moron who brought us Goat, Chicken and various other ridiculous names.

@Harris, I agree with you on the canter past.
Especially if it is shown in so many other countries.
But when being interviewed, being called by a nickname, it is almost a sign of respect and that you "belong" in the game. And most of the names are given to you by a fellow jock or trainer very early on.
For example, I got my nickname from the late Gordon Whyte while doing Dougie Whytes kit at the races + it stuck like glue after his tragic passing, I wouldn't change it for anything. Even the Dubai jocks use it.
I am not sure where "Bling" came from but "Bakkies" has been with MJ from the academy due to his passion for the Blue Bulls + their talisman Bakkies Botha
Lafs is only responsible for a few out there
If you look carefully at jockeys' caps, breeches + other equipment, you will see their preferred nicknames somewhere on their kit...
