Did anybody pick up the great Gary Stevens in the break down sequence???

I had the pleasure of meeting him at the 2004 Dubai World Cup when he won the Sheema for King Abdullah, one of the best rides I have ever seen.

As i wrote on the original thread a while back the show made me cringe, tried to make everything thats bad about racing look good imo..

@#$%& sick show, just watched the whole episode, starts with a Gangster being released from Jail and being met by his driver .The driver has to act as a front for a $2m horse he bought from behind bars..

Then we meet a trainer who has obv held on to a horse and the punted to win after a long layoff..

Then they introduce the degenerate gamblers and loansharks at the tracks(who go onto win the pick six for over $2m)

The last leg of the pick six they need the 8 horse to win to net them $3m but when the poor animal is pulled out for a run the horse snaps a leg..

We then have to watch as the crying jockey comforts the poor animal as the vet puts him to sleep..

@#$%& Hollywood

....I did not want any of the previews reviews etc. spoil it for me.....as is I was expecting the worst.....so far big comparisons with our own local racing......rich money man racing under the lap.....has a criminal record thus cannot own or must have been warned off....previously disadvantaged trainer made it to get a licence but shrewdly keeps the coups to himself.....jockey agent trying to coach his smart arse youngster to keep his mouth shut....a young jock with a heart for horses and not how much he can stuff in his pocket....boy if I could type faster I could write a script or a series of novels.....:S

I think it's an interesting show.

We downloaded a bunch of episodes and I agree it makes for uncomfortable viewing. I can only stomach an episode every few weeks.

Yes, it does deal with the seedy aspects of racing life, but I think a lot of it cuts close to the bone. And that's never pretty, is it ?!

Aside from the aesthetics of the actual show (I think it is well shot, edited, etc), the animal management side of it would appear to be lacking. I can only assume that they got some old, cheap, possibly retired or about to break-down claimers due to budget constraints and then being movie, rather than racing people, didn't understand the management aspects of conditioning the animals correctly for the purposes they wanted. Hence the problems.

We volunteered some horses for a local TV racing series many years ago and no horses were injured or killed on set.

I believe 3 horses broke down before Luck was shut down ? I think there's a saying about once being an accident, twice a coincidence and when you hit 3 you're into the realms of carelessness, negligence or even downright stupidity.

Having said that, look at the numbers of horses that break down on American tracks on a regular basis and you don't see any of them being shut down...

Miami Vice goes racing!

Renowned director Michael Mann ( Miami Vice, Heat etc. ) presents a relatively cliche ridden plot as the usual stereotypes mumble out of the sides of their mouths.

Thoroughbred racing is hardly like to embrace the series as a PRO exercise as the first episode highlights a horse breaking down whilst a number of dubious characters ranging from a convicted criminal to archetypical racecourse battlers pull off an unexplained coup on the Pick 6 ( Did they study the form or did they 'know' something? ).

Non racing viewers are likely to lose interest quickly as the dialogue is one short step shy of unintelligible and the largely geriatric cast offers no eye candy outside of the horses as yet.

I suspect many viewers will simply see the series as further confirmation of the sport being an exercise in thinly disguised criminality and switch back to CSI.
