Pirates is spot on. The top guys only really use it hard as a last resort. As I have said to the appies (they are the worst at pulling the stick asap) the stick is an aide not a weapon. The last jockey to pull the stick is normally the winner. Some of the worst abuse I have seen is due to frustration as the horse has messed the jockey around the whole way to the start and then is useless and at the back. Still not right though.

Graig without mentioning names, are there current jocks that you would not use in your horses even if the offered to ride for free, due to abuse on horses?

Horses can be enormously frustrating beings. We project so many of our hopes and aspirations onto them, but we are mixing two entirely different species and expecting them to understand one another. It doesn't always work. Horses are fairly cooperative beings and will generally try and work out what's required of them, but particularly when we humans think we're asking something clearly and the horse is still not doing it, it can get to feeling as though they're being downright ornery !!
However, the truth is that if you're not getting the answer you want, chances are you're either asking the wrong question, or asking the question wrong.
But add in time constraints and the pressures of a race day and it is not always easy to keep one's cool.
The better horses and riders improve with time and experience. Patience, dedication, practice and a never-ending commitment to improving are what set the great riders apart from the good ones. The more horses you ride, the better you get at reading different horses and types, and the better you get at guessing what a particular horse might respond to. But of course, no two horses are the same and for jockeys there's not always a heck of a lot of time to figure it out. But we all have to start somewhere.
I'm not a major fan of whips - sometimes standing at the finish line the thunder of the hooves is drowned out by the sound of whips falling and it is enormously unattractive. Having said that, I've had a go with the new racing whips and it is really quite difficult to swing them hard enough to cause pain. The flat, cushioned ends seem designed more for the noise they make than the pain they cause, but that's not really the point of this thread.
There is a wonderful John Lyons quote that reads - "There are only two emotions that belong in the saddle; One is a sense of humor and the other is patience." If you're losing your patience, it's time to get off your horse.
Was Fayd'herbe being unnecessarily harsh? I think Chip's point is very valid - you have to judge the ride by the rider. Bernard cannot be said to be a stick happy rider in general. This would appear to be a specific strategy for a specific horse.

@CHIPPY....i actually don't give a damn who agrees with me or not Chippy. Nothing will change my mind on this ride and i never liked it at all. I will remain to believe this ride was a,ittle over the top. I actually am an adult and can think and see for myself. By you raising this point, perhaps this kind of thing will affect you if someone doesn't agree with your viewpoints?
And as for you in your previous 2 posts trying to get personal with me.......ever taken the time to think perhaps THIS is the reason why other jocks and trainers don't like coming onto this forum?
PS - i have been a regular contributor on this forum for quite some time, so if anyone wants to know who i am then please ask. I have absolutely nothing to hide.

I know Marcus is one of your favourites...to my untrained eye he seems very hard on horses...thats how he gets so many of them to keep finding...whats your view...also lairds babies run well but they hardly ever seem to train on.

Just my opinion, but my top 4 whip jockeys in order,
1) Sherman Brown
2) Karl Zechner
3) Anton Marcus
4) Sean Veale
But Sherman wins the gold medal by a distance

Zechner and Veal are worthy of a mention if one takes their stats ratio opportunity to results %
