Banned Substance for Jocks
12 years 9 months ago
Credit to the NHRA for supplying each jockey with a 9-page booklet on the banned substances and prohibited drugs that could come up positive in urine or blood tests. Each jock had to sign for a received booklet.
The booklet provided info on recreational drugs, what their scientific + street names were and what effect they have on the body and/or mind short + long term
The banned substances from a medicinal view were hi-lighted with their healing properties, their side effects and recommended thresholds and withdrawal periods etc. Eg Codeine infused medicines are not to be taken a full 24hrs before racing.
The booklet also contained the names of medicines and painkillers allowed and other alternatives.
Included were also the threshold levels for alcohol in blood and urine samples which are in line with pilots and heavy machinery workers.
I hope these updated booklets are handed out every season with each jocks licenses and that the jocks keep them with their medical books and send copies to their medical doctors.

I can understand alcohol or hallucinatary drugs........ but performance enhancing??......................I'll believe that is an issue the day I see a jockey jump off a slow horse ,pick it up,and pass a few in the straight with the horse in his arms! X(

What people know + what people think they know is 2 different things...
Many people in all areas of racing have these problems.

Re: Re: Banned Substance for Jocks

I knew a few jocks some years ago and they would be up early riding work and by 10 am had plenty of time and nothing to do.......bearing in mind no centre raced more than twice a week then.
That left a lot of idle time to party and that is always dangerous...............it is why I don't understand why most Jocks wouldn't manage their own rides........most have enough time, even today!

My reason for asking....I can understand medicines that impair judgement as they may cause accidents to one and all. I can understand when a reason why some medication is prohibited, is provided. But I sometimes battle with the reasoning or lack thereof. I think that drugs and medication are confused sometimes, and one persons' medication is anothers' poison.
