objection
12 years 9 months ago
I am dumbstruck by the stipendiary board upholding jockey delpech's objection on Greys Gem.I must be blind as I watched the race replay repeatedly and although I am sure whips were being flayed,at no stage did I see Greys Gem throw its head up or hesitate in the least, as one member of the board managed to see.

Perhaps Delpech showed the stipes his welts from the 2 smacks he got from that soft padded whip

@Catfish
U will see that the appy's whip hand stops + gets stuck mid-way as he hits the other horse.
The rule clearly states that no rider may impede another horse or rider in anyway.
Also the winning distance was in the 2nd horse's favour as it was closing the margin
Due to the hard fore head bone, some horses won't over-react to the situation.
Due to lack of space, a more experienced jock would have hit down the shoulder or put the whip in the backhand position to make contact with his own horse and not the other.
For me, Randolph is the best at this as he hardly ever uses the whip in a forehand position.

I sat in the objection enquiry and had a vested interest as I had backed Pilgrim's Inn. However, after hearing the evidence that Depech's mount had been struck twice on the head when attempting to overtake and Mariba admitting that he had struck the horse on the head, I was able to eventually accept, despite initial disappointment, that the decision was fair. However, I think it was one of those ones where there would be aggrieved people whichever way it went. The original winner didn't shift outward much, so his backers can point to that, but the backers of the second horse will say two smacks accross the head definitely affected his momentum. Who would want to be a stipe?!

There probably won't be any upheld objections into Lake Superior incident today even though the winner cost him a place.

Tipster if Horse A runs past Horse B and in the process bumps it but goes on to win by 20 lengths Horse C gets up to beat Horse B by a short head a few years ago the objection would have been upheld but not with today's rules.

Re: Re: objection

The incident in Kenilworth race 6 highlights a bone of contention that I have with the "amended" objection rules........I understand them and I am not suggesting that any objection would have been viable today.
However,I do question whether the changes were well advised for our racing as the new rules offer most justice to the winning horse and therefore win bets. That would seem to be reasonable for markets where backing to win is the majority punt but in SA,many millions are invested in PA's,swingers, trif quartets etc and we seem to be far more invested into exotic bets than many other countries. It therefore follows that placings deserve as much justice as winners (eg.Today the winner of race 6 cost me many PA's and a turn around of a fair sum)
I realise that both arguments have merit but I would think that our diverse betting pools would make a referendum very interesting!
(Personally I prefer the old rules for quite a few reasons, including that meaningful interference should not go unpunished and objections were far less subjective under those rules............just my opinion)

I prefer the rule that if you cause interference to a horse you are placed behind that horse as then we all know where we stand. Thats it but my opinion only.

I prefer the old rule aswell
Cause a horse to lose a place, get placed behind that horse, wether its 2nd or last
Too many jocks ride across tiring horses and cost them positions and get a suspension themselves but still keep their best placing for owners.

Harry H, the objection could still have been upheld yesterday if the stipes decided the fourth horse would have beaten the first horse . Yes, he was beaten over a length, but so was Atlantic Oak beaten over a length when getting an upheld verdict vs Princess Of Light. You can't honestly believe I don't know that new rule having sat in just about every objection enquiry in KZN for the past five years!
