Where are the experts?

Morning guys and gals. I need some info/guidance on the following please.

Are Graduation and Novice races higher than Merit Rated races? And then how much difference is there for example between MR70 Class D and MR72 Class D ?

These things really confuses me and I sometimes wonder whether one should bother about this?

Appologies for my stupidity.

Good luck to all punters and owners/trainers.

(:P)

Callatus, Graduation races are only for maidens,1 and 2 time winners no matter what their merit rating is. Novice is only for maidens and 1 time winners only and once again no restriction on merit rating. They are at fixed weights so you could get a 1 time winner with a MR of 66 running at level weights with another 1 time winner with a MR of 89. This is often why we get small fields in these races as if a very highly merit rated horse accepts everyone else runs away as they are at a huge disadvantage in that race. With the example I gave above, if both horses were the same age and ran in a merit rated Hcp the lesser horse should theoretically get 11.5kgs instead or racing at level weights. Very little difference between those MR races, The MR 72 is just a slightly (1kg) stronger race. Hope this helps

Thanks Craig, very well explained. Still don't know why the higher MR horse will be at a disadvantage if they are at level weights. Where does he get penalised ?

callatus just to add to craigs definition in novice and grad plates a 0.5kg allowance is given to runners for each unplaced start since a horse was placed 1st to 4th except for starts in graded and listed races up to a max allowance of 3kg..///ruling 2.1.9 and 2.1.10 in the racing operaters conditions...thats why you will see very often horses running in the nov and grad plates having the same amount of wins carrying different weights

Could be wrong, but I have not seen the rule enforced regularly in Gauteng - as I recall, one time winners in graduation plates mostly get the same weight and 2 time winners 3 kg's more - but I do remember the different weights on occasion

Just by the way, the easiest remedy to get bigger nominations in all races is to make the plated races higher stakes than the equivalent hcp race. It stands to reason that in a plate race one horse will be best weighted relative to the same field in a handicap, runners should be offered more stakes as an incentive to take on competition while out at the weights. You would get much better plated fields.

If you look at the last 12-18 months, there are a few centres where "out at the weights "is a theoretical disadvantage only.
