Yes we all make mistakes and this is not the 1st or last time a horse that never arrived on course will be tipped to win...but if you didnt see it parade...go to the start...speak to the trainer / owner...look at the TT screen...what the hell were you doing...arent these the basic of this job.

FC .. The on -course procedure is as follows:
-Arrive on course an hour and a half before first race..get all card changes and updates.
-Get comments about first timers from trainers/connections
-Get wired for sound/earpiece coms with OB (outside broadcast van )
-Take up your position as presenter and give selections through to OB
-As horses enter parade ring we go live to International Racing viewers and do what is a parade ring preview, seldom shown on TT
- Horses canter down and the producer tries to show a slow motion of the chosen horses ( not always possible as they don't always canter to post in order.)
- Return to presenter for TT crossing that can be 5 minutes or sometimes 2 mins before they race depending on the other venues.
So there is no time to get up and to go look for the trainer after you have been seated in the beginning for the International crossing.Sometimes once the International crossing is completed there are still two/three horses in saddling enclosure that have not paraded.
If a horse has been scratched during the course of the afternoon we as presenters will only pick that up if we by chance hear Rouvan/ Jehan announce it. Kenilworth is a pleasure as we have a speaker right by the studio. Durbanville is different and where we sit we can't even hear the commentary unless we turn the volume of the TV up. This can't be done whilst presenting due to feedback.
Hope this helps. The new system means that you present for almost 25 minutes between races( and 5 - 7 minutes post race) although TT only receives a maximum of about 8 minutes. If you do a whole card on your own it is quite exhausting.

I think Neil has answered all the posts with he's last comments.
I think that should be the end of it and put the subject to bed.

I think the BIG problem here is NOT Neil but the "system" which is clearly under resourced.
I sometimes do some work for ATR here in the UK. For a live show there is an oncourse presenter as well as an anchor in the studio and sometimes a guest pundit. The Backroom staff though number about 20, they each have a task from sound to graphics and of course card changes. Its the job of the studio based resource to inform the oncourse staff as often they are looking into a small monitor and not sure of being live or not.
As for interviewing trainers this should IMVHO be done well in advance of racing. So maybe Neil should arrive 3 hours before and make some recorded calls to trainers/jockeys/owners/bookmakers. These recordings could then be slotted in when they beocome relevant during the day. Fitting in "live ad hoc " interviews could mean vital announcemnets are missed.
