Retained/Sacked/Frankel/7/Champion
12 years 10 months ago
Boys,
He kindly posed for a foto with my lightie about 4 months ago at a kempton park night meeting. I asked him then if he thought he could win the champonship and he said yeah!
Today Richard Hughes rode 7 winners from 8 mounts, below is how his life has panned out over the last few seasons:
Retained by Khalid Abdulla for many years but amicably breaks agreement in 2007
goes freelance
misses out on frankel as he surely would have ridden him was he still retained
nearly becomes UK champion a few seasons ago
Becomes the leading spokesman against the new whip rules and boycotts riding till it get sorted
rides in India last seasonal break and falls fould of stewards which hands him a lengthy suspension at the startof this season (hits 20/1 for title)
15/10/2012 rides 7 winners and a 3rd from 8 rides at Windsor
Will be crowned Champion jockey this season and next and the one after

What a fantastic feat! He has become only the 2nd jock in Britian to win 7 races, the first was Frankie Dettori 16 yrs ago. the odds of his incredible feat 10,168 to 1.
Bookies still smiling, nobody made destitute and out of pocket from their lot.

Both record-breakers achieved at Royal courses, Frankie at Ascot 1996, Hughes at Windsor 2012.
Should they be knighted???

yes
and sour face ryan moore actually gave up his last ride so that shugsie could get the 7 fold up....they are good mates and he stood himself down. Thats really why bookies "escaped" because it was "only" SIX carded rides.

Sure. But he didn't.
Queally has ridden (and won) on Frankel in every.single.start. and you cannot take that away from him.
Sure, Hughes might have done the same, but history reflects that (for whatever reason) he didn't. But Queally did.
So give credit where it's due. Very few of us get that sort of chance in life. Tom Queally did and he made sure he stepped up to the plate and gave it his all and always made sure he gave the connections enough reason to book him again for the next time. Good for him. I'd probably have needed brown jods and green silks to get on that horse and face those crowds as often as he has.
No matter what anyone says, he'll be able to go to his grave saying "I rode Frankel".
Lucky lucky b@stard !!

i am turning to crack.....
i think you missed my point completely. Richard Hughes has had an amazingly turbulent 5-7 years. Had he still been riding for Prince Khalid then he would have ridden Frankel. SO when Frankel started running in the 2010 season that was only a couple of seasons after hughsie retired from that job. The thought must have crossed his mind that had he hung on he would have been on the best horse we have seen for a long time.
As for Tom and Frankel, i know Tom after he rode for us when we had a horse with Simon Dow. Lets NOT forget he nearly cocked up on Frankel in the St James Palace stakes where he definately went to quick.
Of course NOTHING is being taken away from Tom and I will once again be there on Saturday to see the machine run.
Had the pleasure of being there when he won the 2000 and also at ascot in the QE2
