IT’S set to be a royal affair at Turffontein Racecourse on 3 November as Phumelela together with the Racing Association have announced Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene of Monaco their guest of honour at the annual Emperor’s Palace Charity Mile raceday.

While the event stands out on the racing calendar as one of glitz and glamour, the confirmation that Her Serene Highness will be in attendance has sparked huge interest among both the racing and local community.

The Charity Mile is a unique race whereby each of the 16 horses race on behalf of a charity and its finishing position determines the amount the charity wins, sharing in a total of R550,000 in prize money. Each runner also has a media partner and is publicly represented by a celebrity.

Phumelela’s marketing manager Michael Varney says Her Serene Highness has a long association with horse racing.

“The Princess’ father is an avid horseman, she has grown up with an appreciation of horses and her passion for giving is evident through her charitable work and so her attendance is fitting.

“The public’s excitement is clearly building at the opportunity of catching a glimpse of our South African princess on race day as our phones have not stopped ringing.”

Phumelela together with the Racing Association have also announced the renaming of one of the races on the day, the HSH Princess Charlene of Monaco Starling Stakes.

Among the other famous faces secured so far is TV and radio personality Anele Mdoda, Supersport presenter Neil Andrews and former Miss South Africa Nicole Flint.

While celeb spotters are sure to be hot on the trot to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars, the race day has something for everyone with live music performances throughout the day, kids entertainment, a beer garden and entry is FREE.

2010 Idols winner Lloyd Cele is just one of many local and international celebrities joining forces in support of charity for the annual Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile race day at Turffontein on Saturday 3 November.

It’s a unique race day event whereby 16 horses are matched with 16 celebrities (including the likes of Supersport presenter Neil Andrews and former Miss South Africa Nicole Flint) and charities for the feature race, the R550,000 Charity Mile.

All 16 charities then share in the prizemoney according to where their associated horse places in the race.

The annual race day has become known as a star-studded affair every year and this year is no different.

Among the big names lending their support to the Charity Mile race is former WBA and IBF junior lightweight world champion Brian Mitchell.

The boxing superstar was recently named South Africa’s fighter of the century and is sure to draw a sizeable crowd toTurffontein, all eager to catch a glimpse of one of SA’s biggest names in sport.

Former Idols winner Lloyd Cele will join Afrikaans superstar Amor and her Amoresque dance troop to entertain race goersin between and after the races, but it’s Princess Charlene of Monaco who’s set to be the main attraction.

Among the charities set to reap the rewards of this unique race day is the Peermont Children’sTrusts Lesedi Programme.

The programme that assists youth and school leavers within Ekurhuleni to further educate and secure jobs and was initiated to both reduce unemployment among the youth and increase skills availability for the labour market.

To date, the program has benefitted 450 learners in areas such as nursing and hospitality.

Peermont Group corporate affairs executive Vusi Zwane says such programmes are vital for youth development.

“Jobs are critical in reducing poverty and unemployment and help give the youth an alternative means of earning an income, keeping them away from drugs and crime. Jobs alsoempower women to invest more in the quality of life for their children.”

Peermont Children’s Trusts After Care centres will also reap the rewards of the Charity Mile race.

The After Care centeres are designed to provide selectedschools in the Ekurhuleni catchment area with the tools to provide hot meals, school uniforms and erect playground activities for underprivileged children.
