Chantal Sutherland announces retirement
12 years 7 months ago
USA: Chantal Sutherland, who rode over 900 winners during her time in the saddle, has announced her retirement.
The glamorous 36-year-old, who rode for the girls team at this year's Shergar Cup at Ascot, has called time on her career with the announcement following last month's news that she had lost the Breeders' Cup Classic ride on Game On Dude.

Sutherland had partnered Bob Baffert's five-year-old to several high-profile victories, including the Grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup Stakes in July. However, she was criticised for dropping the reins on Game On Dude at Del Mar in the Pacific Classic, with Rafael Bejerano coming in for a winning ride in the Awesome Again Stakes last month.
Last year, Sutherland nearly won the Classic with Game On Dude, the pair beaten by Drosselmeyer and former fiancé Mike Smith.
Speaking on her website, Sutherland said: "The moment has come where I have decided to announce my retirement from being a professional jockey; I almost can't believe it myself. I'm not sad, but rather looking at another opportunity to begin a new chapter in my life. Looking ahead, I'm excited about new challenges and new opportunities that life has in store for me.
"Racing is so much hard work and takes so much mental toughness; I can honestly say that I've had enough."
Reflecting on the association she struck up with Game On Dude, Sutherland added: "He's a soldier. Together we travelled the world. We won the Santa Anita Big Cap, Goodwood, and almost won the Breeder's Cup Classic. We travelled to Dubai and raced in the world's richest race, the Dubai Duty Free World Cup."
