INTERNATIONAL TREBLE FOR BLOODSTOCK SOUTH AFRICA GRADUATES
This weekend proved a true triumph for Bloodstock South Africa graduates. No fewer than three BSA grads won internationally during the past three days, underlining the great value of South African bred stock.
The weekend’s success continued the great run of form for SAF breds, following Flax’s great win in the G1 Raffles Cup last week.
Under top SA jockey Richard Fourie, Cerise Cherry captured the G2 Premier Bowl for the second time (having previously won the race back in 2010). He has now won four times in Hong Kong for prize money in excess of $2 million.
Connections are hopeful that the tough Cerise Cherry makes the line up for the G1 Longines Hong Kong Sprint in December (a race won by South African superstar J J The Jet Plane back in 2010).
Bred by the Sandown Stud, Cerise Cherry was a R220 000 purchase at the 2007 Emperors Palace National 2yo Sale.
A really tough sort, Cerise Cherry won or placed in ten feature races in South Africa, prior to being exported.
By the excellent sire Goldkeeper, the 7yo Cerise Cherry, trained by Derek Cruz, is out of Cherry Girl.
Ato is one of the most successful horses bred in South Africa currently racing in Singapore.
Winner of last year’s important international race, the G1 Krisflyer Sprint, Ato captured the G3 SAAS Fee Stakes, a conditions race, over 1400m for trainer Pat Shaw.
It was an impressive win, as Ato was giving 5kgs to the runner up.
Bred by Maine Chance Farms, Ato was sold at the 2009 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale for R850,000.
By Royal Academy, Ato, now a 9 time winner, is out of Another Legend, and has earned over $1.5 million in prize money to date.
He could join Cerise Cherry as a South African bred to make the line up in the Hong Kong Sprint in December.
The third BSA graduate to win overseas this past weekend was Spanish Train. The son of Surging River won a class five handicap over 1000 metres for trainer David Hill.
Bred by Zandvliet Stud, Spanish Train is owned by Newbury Racing. He was a R230 000 buy at the 2009 Grand West Yearling Sale.
South African bred horses have proven their class and durability on the world stage, and are great bargains for international buyers.
