Brett Crawford
was happy with Jackson ahead of the Grade 2 Green Point Stakes on the Kenilworth Old Course on Saturday.

“He is effective over the mile,” said Crawford. “It’s not his ideal trip but he will be running at them strongly late. He is drawn wide, so will have to be dropped in, and the harder they go the better.”

The star four-year-old Dynasty colt ran a strong-finishing 1,65 length third to Variety Club in his seasonal reappearance in a Conditions Plate over 1400m three weeks ago.

He will appreciate the extra 200m of this race.

Crawford said he had come out of that last race well and had been pleased with his work on the Philippi sand since then.

Mike Bass said that Castlethorpe had a bit of a swelling on one of his legs after his excellent 2,75 length fourth in the Grade 2 Betting World Merchants over 1200m at Kenilworth last weekend, but he expected him to still line up for the Grade 2 Green Point Stakes over 1600m this Saturday.

“It’s very minor and I can’t find anything wrong with him,” he said. “It’s gone down and seems to be okay. He’s never been unsound so he should take his place.”

The yard didn’t work him while it was swollen but will likely see how he comes through his final blow out to see whether he will run or not.

“It’s a tough race and he will do well to find a place,” said Bass.

The Australian-bred four-year-old Not A Single Doubt gelding is drawn in two with Karl Neisius aboard and the connections will be hoping he can repeat his 1,25 length second to Variety Club in the Rising Sun Gold Challenge over the same trip at Clairwood in June.

Joey Ramsden confirmed that Variety Club and Bravura were in great shape ahead of the Grade 2 Green Point Stakes over 1600m on the Kenilworth Old Course on Saturday, where he has a quintet of runners, including the intended pacemaker The Helmsman.

“They have had great preps,” he said of the top class pair. “They couldn’t have gone better.”

The Helsman, who went from pillar to post in his only victory to date over this same course and distance, has drawn perfectly in three for his intended role, while Variety Club has a fair draw of six.

Variety Club is going to be particularly hard to beat over this tight mile.

The four-year-old Var colt’s phenomenal gate speed invariably puts him into a good position and his ability to switch off allows him to use his superb turn of foot from a handy position or even from the front.

He has good cruising speed so those who take him on early risk falling into a hole and those who wait are usually left flat-footed.

He is likely to be taken on early on Saturday due to the short straight, but the energy he reserves in the running coupled with his turn of foot usually allows him to bound away from them.

His early price of 8-10 looks fair value, considering he would have improved since his comfortable win against most of these rivals in a Pinnacle Plate over 1400m three weeks ago.

Bravura ran a fine second in that race.

He chased his stablemate all the way up the straight, but only began making inroads when the latter was eased down before the line.

He is defending his crown here and will appreciate the extra 200m, but on the downside he is drawn widest of all in twelve compared to his good draw of three last year.

Ramsden felt that In A Rush had come on from his last run, when finishing a 1,65 length third to Changingoftheguard in the Grade 3 Matchem Stakes over 1400m at Durbanville.

He was drawn in pole there and has a good draw of four here.

He proved in his penultimate start at Scottsville that he can handle a mile.

However, Ramsden will be viewing this race as a test to see whether he goes for the Grade 1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate or the two Grade 2 1800m handicaps that are usually the targets of the Cape Sizzling Summer’s second tier horses, the Calulo Premier Trophy and the Peninsula Handicap on December 15 and January 5 respectively.

Ramsden’s battle hardened six-year-old campaigner Lion In Winter finished third in last year’s Green Point from draw 7 and is drawn identically this time.

However, this year’s event has attracted a considerably stronger field and, as a horse that has always been just a length or two off the best, this could be a stepping stone race into those two aforementioned Grade 2 handicaps.

Lion In Winter won the Peninsula two years ago and finished a close up fourth to Chesalon in the Premier Trophy last year.

Ramsden felt that there was a lot of pace in Saturday’s race even without The Helsman in the line up.

However, he added that from past experience it was impossible to guess what his opponents would be doing, so he would only be thinking about how his five horses would run their races.

Yogas Govender
said that Martial Eagle was doing well ahead of his engagement in the Grade 2 Green Point Stakes over 1600m at Kenilworth’s Old Course on Saturday.

This follows a cracking effort in a Pinnacle Stakes event over 1400m against many of the same horses on the same track three weeks ago.

“He ran a top race last time, just 2,4 lengths off Variety Club and ahead of the Champion filly Princess Victoria,” he said. “He ran above his ability when just needing the run as we had given him a break after his last win. The jockey said he was going as if he was going to move right through, but just tired that last bit, showing that he needed it. My only concern is how hard that race was on him and whether he can repeat it against the same horses over 200m further from a wide draw. But he is very well in himself and put in a really good workout this morning (Wednesday).”

Govender was not concerned about the trip, pointing out that he had won over a mile before at Greyville and also finished a narrow third in the Grade 3 Kings Cup at that same track.

“I think he’ll get the mile easily,” he said.

The evergreen seven-year-old Silvano gelding is suited to tight tracks like the Old Course, as his record proves.

The pace should be on in Saturday’s race, which should lessen the impact of his wide draw to a certain extent.

Brandon Morgenrood has struck up a fine rapport with this horse, riding him to two wins and that excellent last effort in just three starts, and he retains the ride.

today just prove again that the only true champion in the western cape is Variety Club......he will run Jackson into the ground on any distant.....hope Jooste agree for the J&B.....Variety Club must only beat the gauteng raiders then because the capetown horses proved he leave them stonecold....and 2000m wont be a problem...pure class

Thanks Western Exp, VC over 1400m-1600m untouchable. May even be tops over1800m. But Jackson will kill in the met. He has has2 great prep runs thus far. Me thinks Brett Crawford is placing Jackson very well for the met. Running 2nd to Jackson over a mile is nothing to be ashamed of.
