Assume the bet is VC X VC : 10 000/1 000, a horse gets scratched and there is a 10% deduction, the revised bet will be 9 000/1 000.

I wonder if this rule was implemented after Henry Mansell took the boys apart with Horse Chestnut from the Guineas into the Met or something like that?

Guys Hibs is correct, my explanation is incorrect. I have been advised that when the "run and deduction rule"kicks in, only bets taken during this period are subject to deductions.

The punter is risking his money in advance antepost with their rules so why a deduction it should be the same as a normal double - if any double first leg wins the second leg can shorted maybe more than 30 perc so wtf is there any difference because its the same horse - so if it looses the first leg do you get a 30 perc refund?

u have to understand that a bookie is just not laying 1 horse.....in a big race double he is laying many other same horse doubles....now only 1 of them is gonna be right...so the bookie is hedging himself by cutting every horse in the second leg by 33%...this is thievery....and blueyonder is correct in saying even in different horse doubles the 2nd leg shortens..so why the difference

The deduction is a common sense fix to a logical problem, although I think the 33% figure is just a guesstimate and is probably never correct.
Normally this is applied to a championship bet when prices of events leading up to the same championship are available. So if someone was an 1/1 shot to win the whole event, but was a 5/10 shot in the semi final, clearly you should just play the dbl to win the semi and the final because he can win the final if he doesn't win the semi.
What you should do is suspend the betting on the final till the outcome is known. How can you offer 2/1 (double 5/10 onto 1/1), when the bloke is a 1/1 shot in a 2 man race final? As a bookmaker you will end up with two players in a final where you have bet 2/1 - 1/1.
In horse racing, you don't really want to suspend the betting on all the possible runners in a big future event just because the nominees are running in all different qualifying events, so the 1/3 deduction is to iron out the effects of adding two events which are linked and which effect the betting of the final event. The bookies are not having their cake and eating it, if you do the arithmetic on the effect, without the deduction you could play each same event runner and end up guaranteed over round.

J D....I HEAR WHAT U SAY...in the earlier example of a championship...u r guaranteed a match if the player wins the semi..and u r guaranteed your bet becomes a straight bet if the player withdraws because of injury ,in some cases in tennis even a withdrawal during a match becomes a null and void match and is taken as if its a scratching.
in ante post racing nothing like that is guaranteed...so whilst i understand that if a player wins a semifinal he is bound to shorten in the final and the price of the player is factored in the final with him winning the semi final...in racing its different...i can go 1 step further and say if i took jackson in the queens plate and met double...and jackson gets scratched in the queens plate....he is still guaranteed a run in the met if all is well.,not so in the championship...if he is "scratched in the semi's"...he WILL not play in the finals

Thanks Dev, have replied your PM. Thank you very much for honouring my bet as it was quoted, even though it should have a 33% deduction. It goes to show that once again Hollywoods customer service is the best by far. (tu)
