WAGNER WINS SUMMER CUP FOR JOEY SOMA
12 years 8 months ago
The Racing Express carried the quote by the great classical composer Richard Wagner –
Joy is not in things ; it is in us
Congratulations to Mr Soma !
I have to agree with Markus Jooste’s comment – “ He is a fantastic horseman, a wonderful trainer and a man for the game”
His strike rate for Mr Jooste is exemplary and to win the Grade 1 Summer Cup for an elite owner can only be good for his cv.
Further in the racing express article I read that the handicappers had something to smile about when the Hangman and Cherry on the Top won the feature races for the 3 year olds.
I wonder how they got it so wrong in the Summer Cup which was surely the most talked about race on the card and would have been dissected by pundits , experts , handicappers and form studiers alike.
Looking at Wagner’s form going in to the Summer Cup he was rated 90 and won a MR 92 handicap carrying 58.5kg – In the Summer Cap he carried 52.5kg and was rated a 96 whilst Chesalon the highest rated horse in the field ran unplaced and Shogunnar rated 99 carrying 54kg ran 2nd.
The allocation of weights appears to have given these horses an advantage and I would like to know who exactly allocates the weights and what process is followed as this seems to be critical information for the public rather than all the publicity around the draw – Wagner was drawn at stallgate 11

Not sure I follow your reasoning ito the handicap - the fact that the 'highest rated horse in the field ran unplaced' has nothing to do with its handicap and also can't follow why you say 'they got it so wrong' - surely you can't be saying that no 1 (the top weight) should always finish in front of no 16 (the lowest weight) in a handicap? :S

Why do you always have to bugger up a nice story with the facts ?

there was 4 lengths covering the 1st 8 horses past the post , not quite the "handicappers dream " but imo close enough .
Soma managed to get Wagner to produce his two best ever career efforts at the perfect moment , that is a most amazing feat in itself . To train three horses for an owner and to win two high profile races proves that when this trainer puts his mind on the job he can get the results.

For a trainer that sits 69th out of a100 . Was it the trainer or was it the Owner ??
