RG the best guide on course bookie those days was tommy morgan, when everybody has 2-1 and him 11-10 you can be sure the horse will come home lonely! When you mention Som Singh you bring back memories for he is the first bookie I had a bet with

I can see that 600m's to finish so clearly in my head... was a fantastic tussle... I think Robbie Sham was on one of them (Main Man??)

Tommy Morgan was a legend, together with his stetson he was the most fearful of the bookies, always restricting the odds!!!
I think he was Chairman of the Bookies Assoc.one time?

Well Done to the Lunn Stables ( Patrick and Lloyd)
I have fond memories of this stable in particular. Why?
Cos it is because of this stable that I had started taking horse racing seriously (1981).
I happened to be associated with a gentleman who was very close to Patrick's brother Tony (A.J). This friend of mine was the "bag man" for Tony (so I was told). He would carry the suitcase with bundles of money to punt.
We have heard many stories recently about people being the PA king etc,etc . Tony was the original PA king.
Taking a PA straight line 1000 or 2000 times and perms of R36.00 or R72.00 for R 5000.00 in the 1980's was a big deal.
The Lunn's stable knew how to line up a horse. They were a fearless punting stable with a small string but loyal owners. They had an incredible strike rate. I remember the match race with Northern Princess vs Senor Santa.
Senor Santa was short in the betting at around 4/10 and NP was 4/1. Gavin Howes rode SS and I think Michael Roberts was on NP. All the talk was about riding tactics.
The Lunn's stable and Roberts bragged on race day about how they had intended to win the race by going to the front. These rumours played right into the hands of Howes who tore away to the front with Senor Santa while Roberts sat patiently on Northern Princess. The rest is history.
Famous jocks viz, Dougie Whyte and B. Marcus rode winners for the stable. I seem to remember that the best strike rate was achieved with Lawrence O' Donoghue.
Most of their horses that the stable had achieved success with, has already been mentioned in this thread.
I loved one of the lesser known horses which I think was called Speak No Evil owners by my late friend Mr Eadie.
Oh! Who can forget another owner "van der Westhuizen" ( affectionately known as Kid Colt). How many of you still remember those picture story magazines - Kid Colt and Apache etc . Well, Mr van der Westhuizen was Kid Colt.
Years later he later had a horse named Kid Colt ( I think with Tony Rivaland).
Those were the good ole days.
