Chave de.......whatever
12 years 5 months ago
Ok so I read an article on the Gold Circle website that Dennis Drier has vowed NEVER to run Chave'd oro over further than 7 furlongs after Sean Cormack told him that the horse does not stay..............
I just watched the replay and perhaps some of the more learned folks on here could explain to me how a horse who runs on stronger than almost anything else in the race in a GRADE 1 to finish better than KOP could not have stayed?
Perhaps it was because he pulled a little during the running of the race? That would mean, in my books that if they could get him to settle in running, like perhaps place a citation bit on him then he could indeed be effective over a mile and perhaps more?
You guys will also remember that I commented this horse had no chance due to the fact that he would not stay............
To be honest I wish I had a horse who didn't stay and finished second behind arguably the best 3 year old in the land!??!!?!
Opinions please.

....there is nothing in the pedigree to suggest that it won't stay....but I think that Uncle Dennis is right in limiting it to a mile max as this horse still needs to learn to settle....showed plenty speed early in KZN and only once the speed is nolonger there..... then look to try go futher....:

Personally I would try and get him to settle as, if he beat a bunch of the Derby hopefuls already why can't he do it again?
However he would have to either be taught to settle or raced with an alternative, stronger bit.
Won't be the first time a jock is wrong

i was surprised that none of the experts gave this horse much of a chance when it was rated / weighted to run in the top 3...i know there was a tailwing but them saying the horse doesnt stay is strange.

Yip, Mr. Drier if you read this forum or perhaps if one of your assistants read this please don't give up on him and keep him to sprinting. Based on his performance on Saturday I think it would be terribly premature to do so. He is a top class horse who deserves to prove himself at distances up to a mile (for now).
I know Sean knows what he is talking about but these eyes of mine don't lie........
Merry Christmas Mr. Drier.

imo.....a horse that is looking for more ground put needs the pace on is KOP.....this is a stayer in the making.....but those notorious Cape crawls will undo his form and make him look very ordinary.....:

Does anybody recall what was the saga concerning The Sheikh all about??? Sure it was the Mr & Mrs O's horse. Just purely for the record as Mr Drier is a top trainer and he comes from the mighty Laird dynasty.Reminds me more of his uncle the great Syd Laird than cousin AG Laird but they all cut from the same cloth and AG Laird's transparency yesterday with the Var 1st timer definitely top drawer.(tu)(tu)

No idea about the saga, but The Sheik was owned by Robert Muir. Stood as a stallion at Dr Marianne Thomson's Ambiance Stud. Was a dud.

You quite right Harris I got the wires crossed a bit and should have referred to the SA Guineas winner called Harmony Forever which has some story attached to it.

What a guineas that was beating London News and Ashtontown. Won the Greyville 1900 when with de kock as a 5yo. Harmony Forever was a very unsound horse.

Was he not originally owned by the late Graham Beck?
